Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe that borders Russia to the north and east, British protected territory to the north and west and the Sedrosian Empire to the south. Ukraine is a semi-presidential republic with its capital Kyiv, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre.
Cost of Living Survey, in 2099, Kyiv is the capital city with the lowest cost of living in Europe.
Ukraine now has a free market but the second lowest per capita incomes in Europe. Ukraine is a regional power, and has a strong military and a growing economy. It is a member of the Global Security Coalition (GSC) and a candidate for the European Union (EU).
The years following the collapse of the Ukrainian People's Republic on November 3rd, 2098, put Ukraine into a period of economic change and political upheaval. As the nation was hit by the consequences of 48 years of mismanagement and autocratic rule, it began a journey of renewal, with bold reforms, a transition to democracy and capitalism, and a new commitment to international cooperation.
Throughout the 2080s, Ukraine's economy faced huge challenges, as inefficient central planning and abundant corruption stopped growth and innovation. The once-thriving industrial sector faltered, agricultural production stagnated, and unemployment soared, leading to widespread discontent and social unrest. By the 2090s, the economy had collapsed, plunging the nation into a state of crisis as inflation skyrocketed, and essential services failed.
Kuzma Mazurenko attempted to implement a series of reforms aimed at liberalising the economy and decentralising government authority. Measures were introduced to allow limited private production, permit travel abroad for select citizens, and devolve power to regional administrations. However, these reforms failed to alleviate public frustration, as Ukrainians continued to demand greater political freedoms and economic opportunities.
Mazurenko then took drastic action, dissolving the parliament, dismissing the entire government, and resigning from and then dissolving his position as General Secretary of the Ukrainian People's Republic. Mazurenko then assumed the role of acting president, leading to the establishment of Ukraine as a new, independent nation.
The beginning of democracy brought hope and optimism to Ukraine, as citizens eagerly participated in the first free presidential and parliamentary elections. Bohdan Nechyporenko won the presidential election, while the parliamentary elections saw the emergence of many different political parties, replacing the now defunct United Revolutionary Worker's Party. Ukraine's new leaders began a path of democratic consolidation, institutional reform, and engagement with the international community.
Ukraine then joined the Global Security Coalition in 2099 and is the most advanced candidate for the European Union. As a member of the GSC, Ukraine pledged its support to collective efforts aimed at combating terrorism and promoting global stability. Also, the nation's candidacy for EU membership is part of its determination to embrace European values and norms, wanting closer ties with its European neighbours.
