On March 25th, in the year 3019, of the Third Age of Man, the Free & Faithful Men of the West, led by the heir of Isildur, Aragorn II, the 16th & Final Chieftain of the Dúnedain, son of Arathorn II, defeated the Second Dark Lord of Middle Earth, Sauron the Deceiver at the Battle of the Morannon; fought outside the Black Gates of Mordor, near the site of the ancient Battle of Dagorlad. Aragorn, having been crowned Elessar Telcontar, King of Gondor, led a campaign and reunited the Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor. He became the First King of the Reunited Kingdoms. King Elessar Telcontar ruled as King for 120 years. He reigned over a period of peace and prosperity, and united all of Middle Earth under his banner, before peacefully dying in sleep.

He was succeeded by his son Eldarion I, one of the first Human-Elvish hybrids in thousands of years. King Eldarion reigned for 100 peaceful years before dying in the year 220 of the Fourth Age. 80 years into King Eldarion's reign, his son having died before him, he recognized that there would be another succession crisis if something was not done as quickly as possible. King Eldarion, not being to produce anymore children, prayed directly to Eru Ilúvatar and asked for his direct intervention. Eru, hearing his prayer, granted his wish.

Eru decided to bring Elros Tar-Minyatur, the brother of Elrond, the Half-Elven, and the first King of Numenor, back to life so that he may lead the Men of the West once more. Eru once again granted Elros an exceptionally long life. When King Eldarion died peacefully in his sleep, Elros was quickly crowned High King. Eru also resurrected the Island of Númenor. Eru granted Elros the rule over all Middle Earth, making him the first Emperor of the Empire of the Númenoreans.
