Each city has a well developed rail-centric public transportation system. The nation has a large manufacturing industry focused on steel and munitions production.

The military is organized in a swiss-style militia system, with the majority of its forces maintained in a reserve capacity. A full air force, and sizable armored reserves are maintained, to be quickly expanded in wartime. No gun control laws exist in the country, arms and ammunition are provided by the government, and can be freely owned and carried without restriction.  The country avoids wars and within the confines of international alliances, practices armed neutrality.

New Amestris is located on rocky land with thin layers of clay and fertile soil. Large deposits of iron and coal. Numerous vegetation that varies greatly from one end of nation island to the other. Vegetation in the south is more similar to that of mainland Washington. The principal trees are Douglas fir, red alder, bigleaf maple, western red cedar, and western hemlock. Compared to the rest of western Washington, vine maple is notably absent, except where they have been planted. Other under-story plants include the evergreen huckleberry, lower longleaf Oregon grape, elderberry, salal, oceanspray, and varieties of nettle. Non-native introduced plants such as foxglove, ivy and holly are also evident.

Farther up the country, however, the shorter Oregon-Grape and the blue Evergreen Huckleberry is seen less, while tall Oregon-grape and Red Huckleberry predominate. The native Pacific rhododendron is much more visible. Amongst the deciduous varieties, Garry oak are seen more frequently in the northern portions and Pacific madrone is also notably present. In the conifer classification, grand fir is found more in the northern part of New Amestris along with Sitka spruce and shore pine. There are three open prairie areas in New Amestris – Smith Prairie, Crockett Prairie and Ebey Prairie. Some patches of prickly pear cactus are found along the slopes near Partridge Point.

Fauna:
Gray whales migrate during March and April and can be seen from both ship and shore. Orca also make use of the waters surrounding the coastline. Clams and oysters are abundant locally and may be harvested from some public beaches. Approximately 230 bird species are reported to take advantage of the diverse habitats in the nation.

Climate: New Amestris lies partially in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountain Range to the west, and has a variety of climate zones. This can be observed by rainfall amounts – wettest in the south with average rainfall of 36 inches (910 mm), driest in the central district of Central City with average rainfall of 20 to 22 inches (510 to 560 mm), and turning moister again farther north with average rainfall of 32 inches (810 mm). Microclimates abound, determined by proximity to water, elevation and prevailing winds.

Military
History: The regulations of the Amestrisian militia system dictate that the soldiers keep their own personal equipment, including all personally assigned weapons, at home, or in a town armory under certain circumstances. Compulsory military service applies to all citizens, men and women. Service is mandatory for all able people from 18-22. About two-thirds are found suitable for service, while alternative service exists for those found unsuitable.

Service at 18 is required unless a student is in a reserve officer program at university. Drilling reserve service is mandatory until the age of 25. All men and women after the age of 25 are updated annually on a medical and family roster until the age of 45, as a means of screening service exemptions during a mass recall to active duty in a large scale war.
