The Campbell Nation began as a collection of exiled highland clans in Scottish settlements in Scandanavia. Through the 1600s the Clan Campbell came to dominate regional politics, eventually forming a feudal confederation. This system remained virtually unchanged until the mid 1800s, when power was centralized into an absolute monarchy.
During the 1950s, aging infrastructure and a slowing economy led to uprisings from left-wing student movements. This grew into an all out civil war, which was followed by a socialist revolution. The new government has followed a complicated, and often contradictory socialist doctrine known as Neosituationism. |

The regional climate is inconsistent. During winter, high latitudes and near-total winter darkness plunge the country into constant night. During summer, the reverse effect makes the Campbell Nation amongst the most agriculturally productive in the region. Sea-breezes near costal settlements and enclosed mountainous terrain do some to negate these extremes, but inland settlements often suffer harshly. |

Although nominally socialist, the Campbell Nation is a mixed economy, with significant contributions from both government and state-owned industries and private enterprise. Businesses are, however, tightly regulated, to a point where state-owned industry dominates most heavy industry.
The federation government is highly protectionist, with strict import tariffs, and embargoes on competitors. Foreign investors and corporations are viewed with deep suspicion. |

Industry within the Campbell Nation is dominated by state-owned heavy industry, in particular steel and munitions. In recent years, however, a joint private and public boom has sprung up in information technology and associated fields.
Agriculture, in particular greenhouse and urban based tower farming remains a strong industry in the federation, with the government providing generous grants to farmers to help maintain food independence. |

Since the socialist revolution, the Campbell Nation has no official military. Instead, its interests are safeguarded by the People's Defence Forces of the Federation. In accordance with traditions passed down from the Clan Campbell, all citizens must fulfill a mandatory period of service. Although there are many civilian and non-combat roles, the majority of men opt into military service, and widespread propaganda efforts portray combat service as a rite of passage.
Federation military doctrine is focused on creating conditions to enable a rapid switch from war to peacetime productions, in order to facilitate a rapid full-on preemptive strike. The Campbell Nation tested its first nuclear weapon on April 12th, 1999 on the 50th anniversary of the mutiny of the CMS Victoria, a turning point of the socialist revolution. |
