History: | Israel and Palestine united into the Israeli-Palestinian Confederation with great pressure from the international community on May 14, 2028. The young state, founded with a complex structure to balance the competing interests of Jews, Muslims, and Christians alike, became stable, and with the economic centers of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Yafo, and Ramallah, it began to greatly prosper. However, tragedy soon struck. On September 8, 2040, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un died when an assassin shot and killed the tyrant during a military parade in Pyongyang. North Korea fell into a succession crisis after no heir apparent could be found, and South Korea soon took the opportunity to reunify the peninsula after nearly a century apart. However, the Chinese government also took interest in the area. North Korea was seen as a buffer zone between China and the West, and millions of North Korean refugees were flooding Manchuria after making a perilous crossing of the Yalu River, so China also marched into the Peninsula, meeting the South Koreans at Pyongyang. Negotiations broke down between the sides, thus beginning the Second Korean War, and after South Korea called on NATO and China called on its allies, the Third World War began. The IPC decided to stay neutral throughout the first years of the war, but American pressure to station troops as a launching-off point to Syria and Iran forced the IPC to join the Americans, much to the chagrin of the Palestinians, who opposed fighting and especially against their fellow Arabs. The delicate balance in the Confederation broke down. The Third World War, later known as the Three-and-One War due to its three human stages of fighting and one stage of ecological reaction, ended when the last 9.0 earthquakes hit Manila, Lima, San Francisco, and Dar es Salaam on April 16, 2051. The Three-and-One war nearly destroyed the world, and new states crawled out of the dust. On August 15, 2051, the IPC was re-founded, but its governmental structure no longer suited the population. Hence, on January 8th, 2052, the IPC was split into two: Tzion and Watan, transliterated. After a few months’ awkwardness, Tzion decided to relocate its entire population to what was once Cape Town (renaming it to Chadash Yerushalayim) and left the Levant to Watah. The two nations remain in alliance to this day. Since its relocation, Tzion has grown to encompass the entire coast of Southern Africa, finding a place in the multinational alliance Rose and setting off expeditions to the inland to see if there hopes of resettling other destroyed areas. Tzion has managed to clear most of the radiation in the area, but citizens are still advised to seek medical help if they experience any symptoms of radiation poisoning. The government mandates all citizens to take once-a-day radiation pills, and it has some promise of becoming prosperous once again. |
