History: The Great Recession posed a certain challenge for the inhabitants of Jersey, a small island located off the NW coast of France. 1/4 of all businesses had closed their doors within Jersey by the end of 2008, and the island was facing a 25% unemployment rate. Although already largely self-governing, the populous became disconnected with the mainland powers of England. A rushed vote was called, with a 90% turnout in January 2009, the largest within recorded local history. The population had decided, and the CPJ (Communist Party of Jersey) squeaked out a majority win. The party leader, Jean Mirellion forced through sweeping economic and social changes, and by the end of his first term (2012), unemployment had fallen to 0.7%, 150 new businesses had been opened, and the country had official seceded from the United Kingdom. Following a vote, it was named after it's first leader. The Communists have held power within Mirellion for the past decade, with 87.5% of the population enrolled as an official member.
