The Free and Sovereign State of Jalisco

After Mexico's embarrassing defeat against the United States in 1848, A period of instability hit Mexico, a sort of 

economic depression, there were, hardly any jobs and many people couldn't afford basic necessities. 

The states of Mexico at the time had to work by themselves to help with the instability. As the Mexican government 

wouldn't do much since it had little money. This led to a general mistrust in the Mexican government, not just this but 

people felt more patriotic to their state than rather Mexico itself. No state felt this more than the state of Jalisco as 

during the depression following the Mexican American war they had a stable source of income thanks to their 

cultivation of the Agave tequilana which is a crucial ingredient for tequila and other important plants like corn, beans, 

wheat, guavas, peaches, and a variety of cacti. Also due to their production of Tequila, which did sell alot. Jalisco found 

itself providing stable jobs for it's citizens and providing benefits to its workers and they also provided assistance to 

other western Mexican states such as Nayarit, Colima, and Michoacán. The people of Jalisco and the very government 

of 

Jalisco felt as if they were their own nation. This was a thought that never left the people of Jalisco. Although when 

Mexico and the other states still struggled with the depression and the Mexican government still not doing much to help 

the people of Jalisco would replace the Mexican flags in their state with the Jalisco one the people of Jalisco full of 

pride asked the Jalisco government to go through with the process of independence by drawing up a declaration of 

independence on June 23, 1850.
