History: | The Cherokee Nation is a democracy with elections for Principal Chief of the nation held every 4 years. Chuck Hoskin Jr. is the current Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. He was elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023. Hoskin is a politician and attorney who previously served as a Tribal Councilor from 2007 to 2013 and as the Secretary of State from 2013 to 2019. About 200 years ago the Cherokee Indians were one tribe, or "Indian Nation" that lived in the southeast part of what is now the United States. During the 1830's and 1840's, the period covered by the Indian Removal Act, many Cherokees were moved west to a territory that is now the State of Oklahoma. The Trail of Tears was the forced displacement of approximately 60,000 people of the "Five Civilized Tribes" between 1830 and 1850, and the additional thousands of Native Americans within that were ethnically cleansed by the United States government. John Ross (1790-1866) is considered the most important Cherokee political leader of the 19th century. He was the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation for almost 40 years, serving during a tumultuous period in the tribe's history. Ross is best known for leading the Cherokees during the 1830s debates over relocating to Indian Territory (Oklahoma). He also fought against the forced removal of his people from their ancestral lands, including protesting the Treaty of Fort Jackson in 1816. |
