Korhal was formed from the remaining loyalists to James Raynor and Arcturus Mengsk after the
end of the Terran Rebellion. Arcturus helped his son Valerian establish the city of Arcturograd,
while Raynor helped build the area which became the city of New Tarsonis.
On the surface, things seemed promising for the small burgeoning country. Behind the scenes,
a rift was forming between James and Valerian. James supported a fully democratic government
in New Tarsonis, while Valerian preferred a more "streamlined approach" to governing,
essentially making all decisions with his father's input. As smaller cities began to build and
prosper, the Mengsk way of governing was soon voted away, and the entire country was unified
under the rule of President James Raynor, with Valerian taking the Vice Presidency.
Raynor's early popularity came from bringing Korhal into the newly-formed Antarctica Alliance.
The AA proved invaluable to the country, helping with funding for infrastructure and land
improvements. As time went on and more cities came into the fold, Raynor and his
administration struggled to maintain a balanced budget, and this eventually caught up with him.
During the Aqua War, the cities of Braxis and New Folsom were hit directly with nuclear
weapons, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths, and the cities themselves were left
largely uninhabitable. Emergency aid was sent from the alliance, but it was put back into
maintaining the military instead of these two devastated cities.
Tired of inaction by the President and local governments, Valerian began to speak out publicly
about his frustrations, which quickly gained him a devoted following. He used his position as VP
to quietly investigate the spending of the administration, and was not entirely surprised to find
that President Raynor had been pocketing a portion of every aid package sent from the alliance.
This money was then paid to other government officials, allegedly to keep their allegiance to
him.
The sudden assassination of Arcturus Mengsk, who was speaking at a civilian rally in Fort
Raynett, drew extreme reactions from the population. It was widely believed that President
Raynor had been involved in the operation, ostensibly to keep the Mengsk family from
attempting to seize power for themselves.
Within days, widespread protests and riots had reached Arcturograd. Valerian used this as
momentum to make his move. He called upon General Alexei Stukov, leader of the Korhal
Ground Force, to send troops to Arcturograd to “quell the rebellion”. Upon arrival, the KGF
stormed the capital building, and arrested President Raynor, as well as several other high
ranking government officials on corruption and bribery charges, and all were immediately jailed.
Valerian Mengsk announced to the country via CCTV that effective immediately, the government
was dis-established (yet again) and a new day was upon the country. He declared that he will
lead Korhal himself, and bring the country back to greatness. The military was swiftly sent in to
every city, to remove and replace local law enforcement with military units, and martial law was
declared. |

Winter, from December to February, is mild and rainy on the coast, where the average temperature in January and February is about 8/9 °C (46/48 °F). In the mountains, where ski resorts are found, winter is cold, with quite frequent snowfalls. The wind blows frequently.
Sometimes, the wind blowing from the Rhone Valley is colder than usual because the air mass is of Polar or Siberian origin. In these cases, there may be snowfalls even in the plains, especially in the northern part of the island. On the plains and the coasts, light frosts may occur during cold waves: generally, the temperature does not drop below -2/-3 °C (27/28 °F), although the records are lower: -8 °C (18 °F) in Arcturograd.
Spring is initially cool and unstable in March and April, while it becomes gradually milder and sunnier as the weeks pass, and it becomes generally pleasant by May.
Summer, from June to August, is warm to hot and sunny along the coasts, while in inland areas, it becomes progressively cooler with increasing altitude, and there is also a higher chance of afternoon thunderstorms. These thunderstorms can sometimes reach the coasts.
On the coasts, the heat is usually acceptable, since it is a bit moist but also tempered by the breeze. Sometimes, however, there may be waves of African heat, usually of short duration, with peaks around 38/40 °C (100/104 °F).
Autumn is initially mild or pleasantly warm, and gradually becomes cooler; it is also quite rainy. The first disturbances occur in September, and become more frequent in October. November is typically a cloudy and rainy month, as normally happens also in north-central Italy.
