Terrain: The Deadfire is a diverse and vast archipelago. A volcanic mountain range called "Spears of Rathun" stretches 150 leagues and provides a natural series of barrier islands to the once-great Island of Ukaizo. The Island of Ukaizo is surrounded by the Spears of Rathun except for several passages, channels, and relatively unmapped straits only used by smugglers or those seeking great secrecy. The first major passage is Razai's Passage; it denotes a chain of islands covered in volcanic ash, making them excellent farmland. The Isle of Razai's unique climate made it attractive to Velothi settlers; Velothi settlers cultivate mushrooms from their sacred land of Vvardenfell and healthy livestock populations such as kawama, netch, guar, and so forth.

From the noble houses of the Tamrielic Empire to the courts of Valia, strength of arms has always been important to the old families. For centuries, the Principi was primarily naval based, but they brought forth a professional and conventional army only recently. However, they maintain their pirate origins with a strong sense of identity. Swashbuckling is a national sport and is widely practiced in the military; for example, the Rights of Captainship and the Council of Captains make the rank of Captain one of the most important in the entire army. Captains retain strong individuality and self-control and declare loyalty to specific Admirals who the Lord Prince commands. The government is a military institution. Despite being a several-tier Representative Republic, with voting for Captains, Captains lending their loyalty and weight to Admirals, and the Admirals holding moot at the death of the Lord Prince, it has a heavy-handed military executive the sole leader of the nation.
