History: | 2064-2069: In 2064 the tsar died with no heir, Vilhelm von Krepost, the current chancellor would serve as regent until 2066 when the monarchy was once again restored with the crowing of Tsar Vilhelm V. He would only rule for three years when he would be violently killed by syndicalist rebels, and then replaced by a military dictatorship, led by the former chancellor, Vilhelm von Krepost. 2069-2077: The rule of Vilhelm von Krepost's fascist government was marked by repression of dissent, specifically the syndicalist movement, radical militarism, and nationalism. Under von Krepost's regime, Williamsbourg became infamous on the world stage for his aggressive foreign policy, specifically his reaction the criticism from Cruzeiro. It was this foreign policy that caused many in the military to plot his downfall, and in 2075, with the support of the military, von Krepost was overthrown, and the monarchy was restored. The new government was seen as a hopeful change, under the reign of Tsar Lyam, the authoritarian policies of the previous government were relaxed, and the tsar's foreign policy was much more relaxed. However, the policies of von Krepost, as well as a few of the tsars resulted in an invasion by several countries in late 2077, which destroyed the country and left it humiliated. 2077-2082: The humiliation in 2077, which still dominates much of politics today, completely changed public opinion of the monarchy, and would result in its power being heavily restricted. Eventually, a civil war would break out between syndicalist, republican, and monarchist factions. The military staged a coup against the current government and attempted to bring the country back together by force. The junta's leader, Field Marshall Bondor, is known now as the worst man in Williamsbourg's history, worse than Tsar William III and Vilhelm von Krepost combined. During the civil war, he had whole villages and towns razed if they were suspected of supporting enemy factions. This would eventually lead to him being shot by his own guard towards the end of the war. The civil war would kill over 1,000,000 people, which is mostly blamed on the policies of Bondor. The civil war resulted in the victory of the monarchists, who restored the tsar's absolute power he had before the great war. 2082-2090: About eight months after the civil war, a small syndicalist rebellion in Williamsbourg's colony of Central Africa would break out. This was largely ignored by the government at first as they were focused on reconstruction. Little did the tsar know, that this war would eventually be the downfall of the monarchy. Once they were able to focus their force on the rebellion, what followed was almost ten years of deadly guerilla warfare, and numerous atrocities were committed by both sides. The colonial forces used napalm, chemical weapons, as well as prototype mini-nukes. There were also extrajudicial killings of suspected rebels. The syndicalists would massacre villages that refused to support them, and would also torture and kill prisoners. Although this would start under the rule of Tsar William III it would continue under the reign of Francis, but to a much lesser extent. Francis was hoping to finally end the war by offering amnesty to the rebels, but none took him up on his offer. The fighting would continue until 2090, when the Imperial Army finally pulled out of the Congo, costing the empire its largest colony. During the Congo war, the mainland was facing armed conflict with its own syndicalist rebels, these too would be put down with great force, costing the lives of over 6,000 people. The loss of the Congo, would only lead to more infighting, and the people became less and less supportive of the tsar. 2090-2091: In 2091, the monarchy was overthrown in a very similar way that it came to power; with the backing of the military, the Jacobins, radical republicans, attempted a coup of the tsar. The coup failed, but it started an empire-wide revolution, which eventually caused the tsar, and many soldiers who remained loyal to him, to flee to the colony of Greenland, where he reestablished his government; he still remains there to this day, hoping that one day he will be restored to power in the mainland. It is commonly believed that the loss of the Congo was the reason for the revolution, however, due to the conflict the unrest at home ever since the civil war, a revolution was likely inevitable; if it didn't happen in 2091, it would have happened later. When the Jacobins took power in June of 2091, representatives from all across the empire met in Williamsbourg and declared the end of the Williamsbourg Empire, and the creation of the Williamsbourg Confederacy. They drafted a new constitution which was ratified on the first of August. 2091-2098: Despite the hopeful future with the establishment of a democratic government, Williamsbourg was plagued by armed conflict. There were still many supporters of the tsar who kept fighting up until 2097. The far-right extremist group, The Iron Legion, was also a threat to the new democracy. They fought to restore the old fascist government of the 2070s. The instability caused by constant internal conflict eventually led to another coup in 2098, which caused the rise of a junta, killing democracy in Williamsbourg. 2098-2099: Soon after the junta took power, a nuclear war between TUI and The Soviet Federation plunged the northern hemisphere into a nuclear winter, Williamsbourg was very close to the Soviet Federation geographically and was hit by fallout; the government's delayed response to this caused the country to collapse, and fall under the control of various militant groups, resulting in months of conflict. The army finally regained control over the country in 2099. |
