History: The first evidence of human presence in Ireland dates to around 33,000 years ago; further findings have been found dating to around 10,500 to 7,000 BC. The receding of the ice after the Younger Dryas cold phase of the Quaternary around 9,700 BC, heralds the beginning of Prehistoric Éireann, which includes the archaeological periods known as the Mesolithic, the Neolithic from about 4,000 BC and the Copper Age beginning around 2,500 BC with the arrival of the Beaker Culture. The Irish Bronze Age proper begins around 2,000 BC and ends with the arrival of the Iron Age of the Celtic Hallstatt culture, beginning about 600 BC. The subsequent La Tène culture brought new styles and practices by 300 BC.
Geography
Continent: Europe
Land Area: 329,914.70 sq. km
Terrain: The topography of the island of Éireann features a hilly, central lowland composed of limestone surrounded by a broken border of coastal mountains. The mountain ranges vary greatly in geological structure. The mountain ridges of the south are composed of old, red sandstone separated by limestone river valleys. The limestone valleys appear as deep green grooves that tend to run in an east-west direction. Granite predominates in the mountains of Galway, Mayo, and Donegal in the west and north-west, as well as in Counties Down and Wicklow on the east coast. A basalt plateau covers much of the north-east of the country.

The central plain, broken in places by low hills, is extensively covered with glacial deposits of clay and sand. It has considerable areas of bog and numerous lakes. The island has seen at least two general glaciations. Everywhere ice-smoothed rock, mountain lakes, glacial valleys, and deposits of sand, gravel and clay mark the passage of the ice.
Highest Peak: Carrauntoohil, 1,038 meters
Lowest Valley: North Slob, -3 meters
Climate: The climate of Éireann is mild, humid and changeable with abundant rainfall and a lack of temperature extremes. Ireland's climate is defined as a temperate oceanic climate, or Cfb on the Köppen climate classification system, a classification it shares with most of northwest Europe. The island receives generally warm summers and cool winters.
