The Wabanaki Confederacy is a North American Indigenous and European settler confederation of the five principal Eastern Algonquin nations (Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqey, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Abenaki) and the French speaking Acadians who settled throughout the region in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Members of the Wabanaki Confederacy, the Wabanaki, are located in and named for the area which they call Wabanakik, or the "Dawnland" in English. The French call these lands Acadia, and the British call it New Scotland. The Wabanaki often say they have lived on these lands since "time immemorial" and modern archaeology dates their arrival in the region to ~11,000 years before present.
The Wabanaki Confederacy is to an extent a democracy. At the local level, each community has a Womens Council, consisting of the female elders of the community. These women elect the regional chiefs. The elected chiefs of the Wabanaki nations then elect a Grand Speaker from amongst all the cheifs.
The lands of Wabanakik are today inhabited primarily by the Acadians, Indigenous Wabanaki, and the descendants of British settlers. There is a significant metis population from years of cross cultural contact between the Wabanaki and European settlers.

History: | The Wabanki Confederacy was formed in the aftermath of devastating plagues and pandemics that killed an estimated 80% of the Eastern Algonquin peoples. The Five nations came together and formed the confederacy as a military alliance in the late 17th century. Wars with the English colonists continued for decades. In that time, the Wabanaki grew closer to the French Acadians and formed an alliance with them, welcoming them into the alliance in 1710. In 1755, the British attempted to deport the Acadian population (14000) from the region, but a resistance of Wabanaki and Acadian militias organized by Joseph Broussard, aided by the French military in the region, prevented the British from completing their plans. After the defeat of the British in the region in 1763, the Wabanaki Confederacy unified into a political entity, with the Acadians and Indigenous Wabanaki and equal status members. The Confederacy made a deal with the French to guarantee trade and security of their fortresses in exchange for recognition. In the late 18th and early 19th century, the British deported many Scottish highlanders and to their remaining holdings in the region. The Confederacy fought against the expansionist United States at the end of the 18th century and again in the 19th century. Tensions between English speaking settlers and the Acadian/Indigenous inhabitants have persisted for generations. English speaking communities have been ceded more political power over the past century as they make up a larger share of the population than the Indigenous Wabanaki. The Wabanaki and Acadians have been consistently slow to change their ways and traditions, which prersist strongly in society. Indigenous Wabanaki influence in the confederacy has weakened over the past century, as the confederacy has become majority European demographically. |
