History: The People's Republic of Panmyeon was born in 1945 from the ashes of the Japanese occupation of Korea. The partisan activity of I Jae-min the First, based in the mountainous microregion of the Panmyeon mountain (Panmyeon-san), successfully maintained an oasis of freedom where the Japanese occupiers could not enter unpunished. The hero-cities of Kaesu (the capital), Jimjae and Panmyeon (also called Panmyeon-si), though, were occupied, with Panmyeon-si being liberated first in december 1944 and becoming the moral capital (도덕적 수도, dodeogjeog sudo) of the newly-born Panmyeon State. The capital Kaesu was liberated in 1945. Being de-facto isolated from the Kim Il-Sung-led partisan movement, Panmyeon managed to remain almost independent. During the Korean War, Panmyeon gained protection by the People's Army of Korea, ultimately becoming an autonomous republic between the two Koreas. Panmyeon is, basically, a 'third Korea', although tightly linked with the DPRK. This cooperation didn't stop the Panmyeon Koreans to maintain their almost full independence and to pursue their objectives and policies. The PPR acts as a bridge to the rest of the World for the DPRK and its policies comprehend elements of market economy. The PPR is a strong industrial area, as well as an appreciated educational pool, with the "I Jae-min" University network being a top institution regarding higher education in East Asia. Starting from 1982 with the so-called "Spring Reforms", the country was opened to Western tourism, becoming an appreciated low-cost destination in East Asia.
