History: | The lands now called Eldmark were inhabited by Eldic tribes, seafaring and forest-dwelling peoples who shared linguistic roots with early Norse and Finno-Ugric cultures. They lived in loose alliances, practicing animistic religions and subsisting off the cold forests, fjords, and mineral-rich mountains. In the 11th century, the region was Christianized under pressure from neighboring kingdoms (notably Sweden and Denmark), though Eldic pagan traditions lingered in rural areas until the 1300s. Between 1200–1400, Eldmark was dominated by competing feudal houses, with frequent skirmishes along the coast and mountains. Eldmark was annexed by Sweden in 1547, forming the Duchy of Nordeld under Swedish crown rule. The country saw major uprisings in the 1600s gaining semi-independence in 1714 through the Treaty of Brisøy. After the Napoleonic Wars, Eldmark declared full independence in 1816, ratifying a constitution modeled loosely after Norway’s and the U.S. The country remained neutral during major continental wars, focusing instead on mining, shipbuilding, and early labor rights movements. Universal male suffrage was granted in 1872, and a secular education law was passed in 1888, far ahead of many European states. Maintained armed neutrality during World War I, but served as a refuge for anti-imperial dissidents and German deserters. Occupied by Nazi Germany from 1941–1944 due to its strategic coastline and coal reserves. A significant resistance movement, led by students and civil servants, is now central to national identity. After WWII, Eldmark was rebuilt with Marshall Plan support, but refused to join NATO. |
Geography | |
Continent: | Europe |
Land Area: | 16,093.40 sq. km |
Terrain: | Eldmark’s terrain is a dramatic blend of rugged northern landscapes shaped by glacial activity and tectonic forces. The western coast features steep fjords, cold inlets, and rocky archipelagos, making it ideal for fishing ports and naval bases. Moving inland, forested highlands rise into the Eldfjell Range, a volcanic mountain chain capped with snow year-round, home to rare minerals and historic mines. The central plateau, known as the Stengrund Basin, supports sparse agriculture and hydroelectric dams fed by glacier-fed rivers. In the east, dense coniferous forests dominate, giving way to windswept tundra near the northern frontier. Lakes and waterfalls dot the landscape, while the southern lowlands hold the most arable land and urban centers, including the capital. With long, dark winters and short, cool summers, Eldmark's geography has shaped a hardy, self-reliant population and a deep respect for nature’s beauty and harshness. |
Highest Peak: | Mt. Eldfjell, 3,748 meters |
Lowest Valley: | Vinterdal Basin, -74 meters |
Climate: | Eldmark has a subarctic to temperate coastal climate, shaped by its northern latitude and proximity to the sea. Winters are long, cold, and snowy, especially in the mountains and interior, with temperatures often dropping below -20°C. Coastal regions are milder due to ocean currents, though still harsh. Summers are short and cool, rarely exceeding 20°C, with extended daylight during midsummer. Rain and snowfall are frequent, and strong winds are common in open areas and fjords. |
