History: | The Legend of the Kingdom of Ropczyce: The Town That Fell Asleep Long, long ago, when Poland was still a mosaic of duchies, the forests and valleys of today’s Podkarpacie hid a small kingdom — The Great Ropczyce. It wasn’t a land of gold or war, but it was famous for something far more precious: a sweet spring, known as The Queen’s Tear. According to legend, anyone who drank from its waters gained clarity of mind, strength of heart, and a soul at peace. Rulers from distant lands would bring gifts, hoping to taste even a drop of that sacred source. Ropczyce was ruled by Queen Adelina, known as The Mother of Silence. Always surrounded by white doves, she could calm storms with a whisper. She was a woman of few words, but her mere presence brought order and serenity. Under her rule, Ropczyce bloomed: markets overflowed with honey, gingerbread, and silverwork, and children learned not only to read and write, but also to “listen to the trees.” But one year, in the heart of the harvest, a merchant from the north arrived — a man named Volkhard. With piercing eyes and a smile like winter night, he brought with him a mirror of black glass, claiming that in it one could see “truth hidden from ordinary eyes.” The queen, wise but curious, looked into the mirror… and for a moment, nothing happened. But from that night on, she was seen wandering the castle halls, as though searching for something she could never quite name. Soon, the spring of The Queen’s Tear began to dry. Flowers wilted, bees vanished, and people whispered that the air “smelled of longing.” The merchant disappeared as suddenly as he had come. And the queen? One morning, she simply didn’t appear for prayer. All that was left was a white glove upon the marble throne and a single white rose, which — strangely — hasn’t wilted to this day. The kingdom began to fall into slumber. People left. Homes emptied. The last gingerbread master locked his oven and hung a sign: “I’ll return when She does.” Ropczyce Today Some say the queen’s spirit still wanders nearby — especially by the fountain in the main square. Sometimes, there's a whisper in the wind: “Not all is lost…” Or maybe it’s just the breeze between the old houses. Perhaps only an echo of the past. But one thing is certain: Something sleeps in Ropczyce. Something waits. And perhaps, one day, it will awaken. |
