History: summary of some of the major points of divergence prior to 1824:


- In 1501 a Spanish ship crashes into new England, the natives of the northeast are devastated by smallpox, plague, and other old world disease but their population is able to recover with immunity before the English colonization begins.

- at the virginia colony in 1621 a preacher is attacked and drowned by a bear, he is believed to be dead but awakens during his funeral, declaring that the 3 mother goddesses, the earth mother, the water mother, and the fire mother had spoken to him, telling him of a newly born goddess that they were to be the nation of. The town’s leaders attempt to burn him at the stake for heresy against christianity but a thunder storm appears out of nowhere and a tornado destroys the colony’s church as well as the home of the town leader. Whether this was a freak weather event or the divine wrath of the goddesses the end result is the same, this new religion becomes the majority religion amongst the colonists and is further developed over time with that newborn national goddess becoming known as Columbia or America and adopting many elements of Roman animism and polytheism. The Preacher also travels to the Plymouth Colony in 1624 to spread the new faith there where he is again almost executed for heresy but another miraculous storm appears and spares him, causing the colonists to convert

- that same year a plague known as the red death appears for the first time, it only killed men and disproportionately affected Europeans, though notably it killed Opchanacanough, chief of the Powhatans as well as some of his warriors. This along with the different religious opinion towards the natives leads to much more co-operation and intermarriage between the settlers and natives than in our timeline; this also leads to two distinct “gender role” archetypes for women: the “war woman” & the “maiden”. The first born daughters and every third daughter after are even raised with the expectation that they be war women & the others as maidens, unless “their nature” shows them to be the opposite archetype before they come of age. This cultural archetype later becomes a legal distinction determined by whether a girl completes 2 of her mandatory 4 years of civil service at 16 in the military or only serves the worker corps or nurses corps. Women also have much more rights very early on; due to the female to male ratio and to assist with population recovery, polygamy is legalized but limited to 4 women and 1 man per marriage; the first wife is considered the head of household and is legally designated the "Materfamilias", and she must approve of every further wife and can force divorce between them and the husband, as they are also considered her wives.

-This plague has major outbreaks about every 30 years until the final outbreak in 1780 but its effects on the descendants of the survivors is less & less each time, mostly affecting recent migrants.

-Lifetime Chattel Slavery never comes into law, instead slaves were only held in bonded servitude for 4 to 7 years, children could not be born into slavery. Their contract holders also had a legal obligation to prepare them for integration into society, making sure they were literate and understand the social customs and laws of the land. This leads to colorism based racism never really taking hold nor the development of distinct racial-based subcultures, but a much higher degree of classism, especially in the early period. This also leads to more intermarriage.

- George Washington has a child with a Seneca woman before they both contract smallpox around 1751, his first wife dies and he marries Martha in 1759. This daughter is named Victoria Washington, and she becomes a hero during the revolution and is chosen to be the first queen of Columbia after Washington refuses kingship.

-during the revolutionary war the final known outbreak of the red death occurs, devasting the British forces and making it harder for them to recruit German mercenaries. The Haudenosaunee, Muskoke confederacy and the Cherokee all side with the Columbians instead of the British. the Columbians & Haudenosaunee capture the Canadian colonies, while the Columbians and the Mvskoke capture British east Florida and west Florida.

- The import of slaves for bonded servitude is outlawed in 1787 as it is seen as an offence to the divine power Liberty and the goddess Columbia. The Columbians assist in the Haitian revolution, and admit Hispaniola as a principality; in 1803 Columbia Purchases the Louisiana territory, French Guiana, French Caribbean territories, and France's Claim to Hispaniola. the Northern part of the lousianna territory is ceded to the Mississipian Confederacy and the Northern Alliance.

- During the Napoleonic wars and the Spanish colonial rebellions the Columbians seize British and Spanish Caribbean colonies as well as central America and the north coast of south America.

~ Most of the population is of mixed ancestry, though different regions may have different admixtures and common phenotypes, such as Carolina being much more African and new England being much more native, etc.

As time goes on from the point of divergence, many figures we know of simply didn’t exist or lead very different lives.

History: upon reaching age 16 everyone must serve 4 years in civil service, for men this is 1 year in the labor corps, 1 year in the military or labor corps then 2 year mandatory military service. for women they must serve 1 year in the labor corps then 3 years in either the Labor Corps, Nurses Corps, or the Military. all women who serve 2 years in the military are legally designated as war women.

after age 20 military service is voluntary, conscription is allowed but only in the case of invasion and is rarely implemented.

the labor corps is also a voluntary paid service after civil service and provides jr. college, university & trade skills, as well as employee placement assistance.
