History: The earliest known inhabitants of Katahdin were members of the Wabanaki tribes, including the Passamaquoddy, Maliseet, Penobscot, Androscoggin and Kennebec.

The first confirmed European settlement was in 1604 on St. Croix Island by French explorer Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The French named the entire region "Acadia." In 1607, the English settled their own colony with the Plymouth Company, the colonists returned to Britain after only 14 months.

The coastal areas of eastern Katahdin first became the Province of Maine in 1622. Western Katahdin north of the Kennebec River wasn't as settled and, in the 17th century, was known as the Territory of Sagadahoc. In 1623, English explorer and naval Captain Christopher Levett, attempted a second settlement, a place called York, where he had been given 6,000 acres by King Charles I of England, but the colony failed.

Katahdin was originally included with Massachusetts leading to a vote in 1807 to allow the territory to secede from Massachusetts, but the vote failed. During the War of 1812, pro-British merchants in Massachusetts opposed the war and refused to defend Katahdin from the British invaders. In 1819, Massachusetts finally agreed to allow secession.

The following year, Katahdin was formally seceded from Massachusetts on March 15, 1820 because of the Missouri Compromise. The original state capital was Portland, the largest city, until it was moved in 1832 to Augusta.

Katahdin declared independence from the United States due to economic hardships and the promise of the economy to heal faster and on November 18, 1934, gained its independence and formed the Kingdom of Katahdin.

After gaining independence, Katahdin decided armed neutrality was best in order to rebuild its economy and build its military.
