History: The history of South Korea starts with the founding of Go-Joseon, at 2300 B.C. After the invasion and fall of Go-Joseon, three countries were founded in the area- Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla. Known as the Period of Three Kingdoms, Silla would unify these countries after centuries of bloody wars. But eventually Silla's influence would deteriorate into a power vacuum leading to several rebellious states rising up and taking on the old historical names of Korea's ancient kingdoms. A messy period of alliances and in-fighting followed, but one state would once again establish a dominant position—Goryeo, itself named in homage to the earlier northern Goguryeo kingdom—and form a unified Korean state and a dynasty which would last almost 500 years. After a rebellion that led to the last king of Goreyo king being overthrown, the Joseon Dynasty was founded. Joseon consolidated its effective rule over the Korean peninsula and saw the height of classical Korean culture, trade, literature, and science and technology- mostly during the rule of Great King Sejong. However, constant wars lead to the decline of the country. Later Joseon would waste away as a 'puppet kingdom' before being invaded by Japan, starting the tragic Colonial period. After World War 2 Korea gained its independence, but because of US and Soviet occupation the nation was split in half- North Korea and South Korea. After a devastating war with North Korea, South Korea entered the modern age, overcoming extreme poverty and several dictatorship regimes.
