Hellenistic Era: The city flourished during the Hellenistic period, as it became a prominent port and trading hub due to its strategic location in northern Greece, along the Thermaic Gulf. Roman Era: Thessaloniki became part of the Roman Empire in 168 BC, after the Roman victory over the Macedonian Kingdom at the Battle of Pydna. It later became the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia. The city's importance continued under the Roman Empire, with a population of more than 100,000 during the 1st century BC. Byzantine Period Christianization: In the 4th century AD, Thessaloniki became a major center of early Christianity. The Apostle Paul visited the city, and two of his epistles (1 and 2 Thessalonians) were written to the city's Christian community. Byzantine Capital: Thessaloniki became part of the Byzantine Empire following the division of the Roman Empire. It was an important city in the Byzantine world, serving as a regional capital and a major religious center.
