King darkstalker is an animus, which can be used for magic with the exception that each piece of spell strips a piece of their soul. Darkstalker before taking the throne had created a talisman to store all power so he couldn't be affected by this but secretly made spells resulting in him being forced into eternal slumber for 2,000 years in agate mountain.

After waking up, he immediately manipulated those around him and soon or less became king of the nightwings.

 

His reign was more of fear than actual loyalty, plus the fact he was almost 5x bigger than the average dragon made him one hell of a king.
