After the series of civil wars in Scandinavia (January 2042 - June 2049), the nations of Norway Sweden and Denmark united to form The Kalmar Union lead by Prime Minister Eric Friberg, who had recently turned 40, but he was a bold man nevertheless. Soon after his rise to power, Friberg peacefully annexed Iceland, and with this all of Scandinavia was allied under the union.
Eventually, tensions between the new union and the kingdom of Finland arose, and on February 17th, 2065, things escalated into an all out war. This war dragged on until the Finnish government called for peace in May of 2069. The peace treaty had the Nordic Union annex a large portion of Finland in exchange for literally nothing. The king of Finland greatly opposed this but had no choice, as Friberg was not up for any negotiations.
Friberg's conquest didn't stop there, as he turned his attention to Russia and the countries neighboring the Baltic Sea. Seeing what had happened to Finland, most countries decided to give the union what they wanted, but Poland and Russia were not as willing to give up their land. Although they were both fighting a losing war against the same country, neither country would ally with the other, which was a big reason why the Kalmar Union was able to win the war. They took a lot of coastal areas from Russia, and had done to Poland similar to what they did with Finland, taking a good portion of their land. This war had lasted from December of 2072 to June of 2077, and had established the Kalmar Union as a force to be reckoned with.
Although it seemed strong from the outside, the nation was having some internal struggles. Friberg had stepped down in 2077, weeks after the successful war with Russia and Poland, and after that a man named Jolin Parkov at only 29 years old was elected to take his place, but not for the better. Jolin's true intentions were showing, and he was becoming more hated by the minute, and it all peaked when he had declared himself as dictator of the nation during a speech made in January 6th, 2078, and had changed the union's official name to the "United Communist Provinces of Kalmar" of "UCPK" for short. People instantly rebelled against this new communist movement, but were met with brutal military intervention, resulting in well over 850,000 rebel deaths.
People lived under strictly enforced no emigration laws, and treason was considered a death worthy crime. They were treated harshly and the standard of living was at an all time low. The discontent brewed for a couple more decades, and had ended up in a coup d'état against Parkov's regime. Some nationalists remained around Kalmar, and this ended up in a war between the Republic of Kalmar and the UCPK nationalists that had lasted from March 2099 to October 2104. It was a bloody war, but the rebels eventually won with the assassination of Jolin Parkov on September 30th, 2104, crippling the nationalists and leading to the rebels fully taking the city of Kalmar in only a few days.
After the rebellion, a new socialist government was established in the new capital of Oslo and under the rule of supreme leader Gecko. Gecko was a military leader known and loved by many, and had contributed greatly to the liberation of the nation, and he was and is a man for the people. After the new government was established, the nation was officially named "The Socialist Republic of the Kalmar Union", because "Oslo Union" would have sounded a bit strange.
Gecko aims to repair relations with Russia and the Polish-German Union and make up for past hostility towards the nations. |
