23 March 1996: Al Qaeda funds the newly formed group, allowing it to arm itself better and grow exponentially.
30 December 1997: The group launches a military attack on the borders, the attack is so well prepared (and generals are so well paid) that nor the Tunisian nor the Lybian army can stop the group.
Till 1 June 1999: The jihadist group expands itself as much as it can and its support grows exponentially due to the heavy propaganda land under their control and nearby are receiving

Apparently he was able to promise one of the soldiers who captured him gold and fame in exchange of replacing him with another man, the soldier fell for it and he got then killed by the new leader.
