To the west of the region, the Yan Mountains rise up, forming a natural border between Johnistan and Inner Mongolia. The Yan Mountains are a rugged and remote range, with elevations reaching up to 2,600 meters (8,500 feet) above sea level. The mountains are home to several nature reserves and scenic areas, including the Wuling Mountain Scenic Area and the Jingniang Lake Scenic Area.
To the east of the Yan Mountains, the terrain gradually descends into a series of plateaus and basins.
