History: The Exodus to Antarctica (2048-2049)

In 2048, the Australian government, seeing an opportunity to establish dominance over its Antarctic claim, relocated itself and much of its population south. This move followed the collapse of the Madrid Protocol, which had banned mineral extraction in Antarctica. With climate change straining resources, world powers renegotiated the treaty, allowing controlled mining. Australia led the charge, securing its future with large-scale operations.

With the government gone, mainland Australia was left vulnerable. Those who remained struggled as governance collapsed, and essential services failed.

Foreign Occupation and the Struggle for Survival (2050-2108)

In 2050, Russia launched a full-scale invasion, overwhelming the disorganized population and seizing control of vast territories. Brutal occupation followed, with resistance crushed. China, however, acted differently, stepping in to stabilize key regions like New South Wales rather than conquer them outright.

Fears of nuclear escalation deterred international intervention, and mainland Australia was effectively abandoned. The Antarctic-based government, bound by logistical challenges and international treaties, could not return.

Over time, much of the population assimilated into foreign rule, losing their cultural identity. However, coastal enclaves clung to their heritage, preserving traditions like BBQs, eating Tim Tams and Shapes, and drinking Milo—symbols of defiance that fueled the resistance.

The Byron Movement and the War of Liberation (2108)

On Friday, 27 Jan. 2108, Byron Bay became the birthplace of a new nation. United by the desire to reclaim their homeland, local leaders formed a government. With limited military strength, Byron’s forces relied on guerrilla tactics and foreign mercenaries, rapidly advancing along the coast.
After securing Sydney, they pushed inland, reaching Cootamundra before being forced back by the Chinese-led occupation forces. Despite setbacks, Byron’s independence was secured, cementing its status as a rising power.

The Founding of the Republic and the New Era (Late 2108-2110)

Byron was established as a parliamentary republic, electing Daniel Brett as its first prime minister. He prioritized military rebuilding and secured Byron’s place in the Sacred Cornbread alliance, strengthening international ties.

The Commonwealth of Byron has since worked to establish diplomatic relations, though Belarus, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, Serbia, also of course China and Russia refuse to recognize its sovereignty.
Domestically, efforts focus on reviving pre-occupation businesses, with companies like Woolworths, Caminetto on the Rocks, and Happy’s Chinese returning. As Byron looks to the future, it remains committed to securing its place on the world stage.
