History: | In the beginning, cangalia was a short-lived independent principality located in modern-day Saulkrasti. According to old evidence, the state was established around 1385 by its native Cangalian Speakers. It was a vassal state of the Confederation of Livonia and was integrated around the 1420s. In the modern day, the Cangalian language has gone almost extinct, there are only around 400,000 native speakers of the language. The nation gained its independence in the Latvian independence war in 1919 and was not recognized widely. In 1934 a coup was thrown by the Ulmanis government to align the nation towards annexation, which happened in 1936. In 1945 Cangalia was established as an ASSR of the Soviet Union and was handed the territories municipalities of Čangēme, Sigulda, Ādaži and Southern Limbaži. During the collapse of the Soviet Union Cangalia, along with the other Baltic states declared independence. On August 24th, 1991 the nation's independence was recognized by the Soviet Union, and many other nations. However, tensions with Latvia began to rise in the late 1990s. Latvia had long had territorial claims on Cangalia's land, and tensions between the two nations had been simmering for years. In 1999, Latvia launched a surprise attack on Cangalia, claiming that Cangalia was building a military presence on their disputed border. The Cangalian military was caught off guard by the sudden attack and struggled to defend against the Latvian invasion. However, as the war progressed, the Cangalian Liberation Army began to gain the upper hand, thanks to their superior tactics and equipment. The war was characterized by brutal battles and atrocities committed by both sides, causing widespread death and displacement on the Cangalian side. However, the Latvian government was determined to press on with the war, believing they had a chance to claim Cangalia's land. In 2001, CLA launched a counteroffensive, pushing the Latvian army back across the border. The Latvian government, under pressure from the international community, agreed to a ceasefire, and the war came to an end. |
