"Struggle is an illusion. The tide rises, the tide falls, but the sea is changeless. There is nothing to struggle against. Victory is in the Qun." |
The Tamassran caste dictates nearly every aspect of Qunari society strictly and in accordance with the Qun. Breeding, naming, educating, and assigning employment all fall under their purview. The highly collectivist people rarely oppose these practices, some even find it comforting to know their place in society with absolute certainty. Those that forsake the Qun may leave freely and be branded Tal-Vashoth, otherwise they must face the ministrations of the Ben-Hassrath for... re-education. The Salasari, triumvirate in the common tongue, is divided such to represent the Body of the Qun, the Mind of the Qun, and the Soul of the Qun. The Ariqun leads that branch which represents the Soul. The Arishok and Arigena represent the Body and Mind respectively and on paper their titles are no more lofty than that of the Ariqun himself. Nonetheless it is acknowledged that the Ariqun wields the true power of the Salasari. | The Salasari are chosen based on merit alone. What constitutes merit in the eyes of the Qunari is, like all things, passed down through the cantos of the Qun. The Qun encompasses all aspects of everything and everyone completely. The Qunari have little use for names and even Tal-Vashoth often never take one. Instead Qunari prefer to identify with the Purpose assigned to them by a Tamassran when they turn 12. For those whose Purpose is unique their names can serve to identify them as an individual, others need to be numbered when acting in large groups such as on a battlefield. "The Qun is a path one follows, not a chain that binds." "As a fish stranded by the tide knows the air or a drowning man knows the sea, so does a mage know magic." |
"Mastery of the self is mastery of the world. Loss of the self is the source of suffering. A self of suffering, brings only suffering to the world. Suffering is a choice, and we can refuse it." |
