History: The Shire was first settled by hobbits in the year T.A. 1601 (year 1 by Shire Reckoning). Led by brothers Marcho and Blanco, hobbits from the vale of Anduin migrated over the Misty Mountains, and lived in the wilds until discovering the Shire.

Following the fall of Arnor, the northern kingdom of Men, the Shire became a self-governing realm, electing their own Thain: Bucca of the Marish, who would hold the King's powers, though the Shire was and still is largely self-governed by the various clans. Arnor would not abandon the Shire, however, sending Rangers of the North to protect the borders and keep intruders out. Nevertheless, the Shire has been invaded three times, though all failed.

After the War of the Ring and the subsequent Scouring of the Shire, which ended with the Battle of Bywater, the trees were restored with soil given to Samwise Gamgee when visiting Lothlorien.
