In the tradition of the Brazilian Army, April 19, 1648 is considered as the day on which the roots of the oldest of the three national armed forces were symbolically established. The date refers to the Battle of Guararapes, involving the Dutch and Luso-Brazilians and where it is recognized that for the first time Brazilian indigenous peoples, African slaves and Portuguese and Brazilian whites united to reconquer the territory occupied by the Dutch in northeastern Brazil for years.
