History: | Story - The Long Dark The Forest Talkers are a group of survivalists on the island of Great Bear. Prior to The Collapse, they set up stashes across the island as they saw an eventual collapse to society. In 20XX, the Forest Talkers were right. An economic collapse across North America, and possibly Europe had occurred. An already dependent on the Mainland Great Bear, now saw the worst of it's problems arise. People all across rural Canada flocked to urban areas to find greater economic stability. All Rural towns and communities in Canada were now cut off. The banking system across North America had collapsed, and many currencies became worthless, including the Canadian Dollar. The island of Great Bear had already suffered from decades of economic decline, but The Collapse was it's final straw., and the people of Great Bear soon learnt to become Self Sufficient. As there were no major economic drivers of Great Bear, the island quickly relied on the Mainland for a lifeline of supply. Medicine, food, water, and other basic necessities. The people of Great Bear found themselves rationing food WW2 style. In some cases, 'Mainlanders' felt justified in taking what they needed to keep urban areas alive, dismantling some of Great Bear's only heavy infrastructure. The Civilians of Great Bear quickly became unhappy with being dependent on the Mainland, and the Mainlanders' believe of economic benefit off of Great Bear, many left. Those who chose to stay on Great Bear began to become completely self sufficient. Small scale food production propped up all over Great Bear, and many individuals and even communities took part in this, even producing power resources. These practices weren't only for their survival, but were seen as an act of rebellion against the Canadian government. Soon enough, Great Bear split into two factions. Those who believed that Great Bear should remain dependent on the Mainland, and saw the supplies as an apology for using the island for the Mainland's benefit. Those who were against the Mainlanders, sought for independence and called any trade and travel with the Mainland evil. The First Flare 10 Years after The Collapse, a massive geomagnetic storm had brought technology to it's knees. Anything from a cellphone to a vehicle now would be unable to run,. However, it's more devastating affect was its affect on the Weather patterns and Wildlife of Great Bear. Wolves were not extremely hostile, and wildlife activity reached unusual levels. The weather on Great Bear also became extreme , leading to unpredictable changes. This event on Great Bear was known as 'The Quiet Apocalypse', however the cut off communication from the rest of the world made them blind. The First Flare was a Carrington Class event that struck Earth, sending the entire planet essentially back to the Stone Age. This led to the Collapse of human civilization across the globe, and was referred to as the 'Louder Apocalypse' in urban areas. Bears even began to wake from their hibernation and were spotted regularly roaming areas. Birds were woken from their sleep in the middle of the night, when The Aurora was out. The disruptions in the Weather patterns led to brutal blizzards and snowstorms, severely cold temperatures, happening all over Canada. Electrostatic fog and Aurora's commonly plague much of the world. With the loss of electricity across the globe, humans resorted to mass looting and violence to get by in affected areas, including Great Bear. All forms of law enforcement and federal military had seemingly broken down in the time being. Great Bear's Demise, and the Rise of The Forest Talkers With the already raging economic collapse, earthquakes shook Great Bear. The Milton Water Tower was shut off in 2012 due to the earthquakes. Avalanches and such occurred all over the island, forcing the population to adventure through the island's deep and damaged mines to get through the most basic of obstructions. The mountain climbing parks were closed, and an attempt to re-open the Carter Hydroelectric Dam had failed. Robert Clarke (The CEO), and a skeleton crew were working in the dam, when they were trapped by a group of Forest Talkers. It took days for mediators to arrive, and although no violence had broken out, the dam had remained closed and the Forest Talkers continued their work, finding important papers within the Dam to further justify their campaign against industrialization. The Forest Talkers regularly engaged with industrialists, and continued with the destruction of property belonging to industrial kingpins. A Forest Talker recovered documents that give evidence of an illegal logging camp, run by the industry, Breyerhouse, who almost had a monopoly over the island after the collapse, but soon died off with the events of The First Flare. |

Military | |
History: | The island of Great Bear prior to The Collapse, relied entirely on the Canadian government and the Canadian Armed Forces for protection. With the events of the Collapse and the First Flare, with Great Bear finding itself isolated, essentially declared independence in 20XX. When the island split into 2 ideological factions, some small scale violence broke out, but nothing much of it. With the rise of The Forest Talkers however, established some sort of a defense force. With priorities of attacking industry and returning to primitivism and survival, the Forest Talkers have developed a form of Guerrilla Warfare, which they call 'Winter tactics'. Essentially, it is the avoiding of combat until an unpredicted event catches an enemy off guard, giving them time to sweep in and take them out. However, with isolation from the rest of the globe, and no words of outsiders, The Forest Talkers have resorted to supporting locals and helping them with survival skills, and lifting them out of tough situations. The Forest Militia, officially established in the 2030s, based their equipment on primitive technology, giving them an upper hand on a proper fighting force. Many fighting forces of the world at this age, are assumed to be using ammunition stockpiles, and modern equipment. However, once these run out, there is no more of them. But with this primitive tech, The Forest Militia can easily overpower an enemy. There are no designated Uniforms of a Forest Talker Militant, however many can be seen wearing military grade parka's left over from an old Canadian Armed Forces stash, along with various types of pants and boots. Many Forest Talkers wear clothing they have made from bear, deer, and much more. This is similar to the civilian population, who really does live off the land. The Forest Militia uses bows as a ranged weapon, and primitive made tools such as stone knives and axes for resource gathering. In 2032, the Militia was given a task to take down the Bear haunting Mystery Lake, after the disappearance of many individuals occurred. A great battle occurred between man and the bear, where 4 men attacked, and 1 made it out alive with a serious injury in the shoulder, however the bear was killed, and locals took the soldier in to provide him care. |
