Half a century later, the Moraccan Arab Jamahiriya was established by the Idrisid dynasty. Under the Almoravid and the Almohad dynasties, M.A.J. dominated the Maghreb and Muslim Spain. The Saadi dynasty ruled the country from 1549 to 1659, followed by the Alaouites from 1667 onwards, who were defeated in the event called “The Great Teary Night.†This event liberated M.A.J. from an oppressive regime of monarchists and established dynasties of the ancient era. On that fateful night 21st of May 1659, all royals and nobles were executed in a massive uprising. No man, woman, nor child that had a portion of royal blood was spared, leaving this tiny fledgling of a nation without leadership and direction. But from the ashes, there arose a band of brothers, generals for the cause of liberation and freedom. These ten brothers are remembered as descendants from the prophet Mohammed himself. Four rugged mountain chains dominate Moraccan Arab Jamahiriya topography and divide the country into three geographic regions: the mountainous interior, including plateaus and fertile valleys; the Atlantic coastal lowlands; and the semiarid and arid area of eastern and southern Moraccan Arab Jamahiriya where the mountains descend gradually into the Sahara Desert. In the north, the Rif mountain range runs parallel to the Mediterranean. South of the Rif range, a series of three Atlas Mountain ranges somewhat overlap one another as they slant across the country on a generally northeast-southwest axis. The most northerly of the three, the Middle Atlas range, is separated from the Rif by only a narrow corridor. The lofty High Atlas range is situated immediately to the south of the Middle Atlas range and is parallel to it. Farther south and to the west lies the Anti-Atlas range.
