On Tuesday, Gwlad Emrys has formally left the United Purple Nations. It's a move that shocked many across Gwlad Emrys as, yesterday, the Prime Minister released a statement noting the following:

“I stand by the words. Being in the UPN is the best decision I have made as Prime Minister”

“However, it's time to start a new chapter. A new stage in our nation's development”.

As the moment of withdrawal approached, the Parliament was lit up Purple before being extinguished at 22:00. The official UPN flag was withdrawn from the mast outside before being stowed in a commemorative cage inside the Parliament building.

The Merlinism Party leader also issued a statement in which he said, “the Prime Minister has at last made a suitable move to ensure that Gwlad Emrys remains independent. I urge him not to join another alliance in haste but to take the opportunity to ensure that we remain an independent nation”.

However, this move has not been without dissent. The main opposition parties have made an outcry at this move by the Labour led government, with the Liberal Leader “demand(ing) an explanation about this absurd course of action”. The Green Party Leader has already signalled her intent to run the upcoming General Election on the policy of retuning to the UPN.

A poll released by the Gwlad Emrys Post shows that only 23% of the population support this move. Tuesday night, opinion polls have seen the Labour Party's support drop from 40% to 19% (a drop of 21%).

The Pound has crashed overnight from 2.42 to 1.62 with a further drop expected. Experts are warning of a financial crash following our withdrawal with supply chain problems causing a shortage of manufactured materials being imported.

Tiroedd y Gorllewin Mayoral Region has been most angered by this move, with demonstrations seen across the city of Caerdydd and Cwmtwrch. The local Liberal Mayor has called the government  “two faced and plain stupid”.

The government has declined to comment further.

Analysis

This is a huge moment for the Prime Minister politically. He's gone through his career standing up to his party, arguing how Gwlad Emrys is better as a UPN member. That is why the statement we received last night was shocking to many. Today, many of the government's supporters feel betrayed and angered. This is not what the public wanted - but the decision is not theirs to make. It is the Prime Minister's decision, and time will tell how it will effect his electability in the future.

Breaking - Liberal Leader tables Motion of No Confidence

The Liberal Leader has swiftly released a statement in which he says that “after the PM's announcement, I have tabled a motion of no confidence in the government. It is my wish to see democracy restored to government and the only way to do this is to remove the Labour Government". The vote will take place tomorrow.

Breaking - PM rules out parliamentary vote

The Prime Minister has released a statement in which he rules out tabling a Parliamentary Vote on UPN withdrawal. In his statement, he said that “a division in Parliament would only deepen the divisions across our nation”. He went on to “urge all parties to come together to work on future, not the past”. It is unclear whether the Liberal Leader will retaliate with a Vote of No Confidence.

Breaking - Two new Labour MPs join the cabinet

Mary Johnson has been announced as the new Home Secretary with Jerry Donaldson joining the cabinet as Foreign Secretary. Both are members of the Labour Parliamentary Party. This gives an indication that the coalition with the Green Party has collapsed following the move to leave the UPN.

Breaking - Liberal Leader gives ultimatum to Prime Minister

The Liberal Leader has also released a statement in which he describes a “productive phone call with the Prime Minister”. According to the statement, the Liberal Leader made it clear that “the Prime Minister should put the matter up for vote in Parliament within the next week. If not, I am prepared to table a vote of no confidence to ensure a democratic government is elected”.

This is a full scale ultimatum by the Liberal Leader, and places the Prime Minister in a bother. If he declines to allow a vote, the lack of a majority means the fate of the government lies in the hands of the Greens, who are extremely angry. If he allows a vote, the Greens are likely to vote against the decision, with possibly a large number of backbench abstentions.

Breaking - Foreign Secretary 2nd cabinet member to resign

The Foreign Secretary Matt Williams is the second minister to resign over the developments. In his resignation speech, he said that “although I did agree with the decision to leave the UPN, I do not agree with lowering the threat level”. He added “I believe the threat is at a higher risk than before”. This will come as a huge blow for the Prime Minister that, only a few hours ago, commended the Foreign Secretary for his work in organising a deal with IKEA.

The Conservative Party Leader has issued a statement in which he calls for “a deep and urgent inquiry into the way decisions were handled by the government”. He has called the move by the government “shameful” and criticised the “lack of consultation, discussions and agreement by consensus”. This is the most eruptive statement yet, with the leader calling the Prime Minister, “a weak, shameful Prime Minister whose regard for the democratic system has been thrown out of the window”.

This is simply one of many voices criticising the decision. It is unclear whether the Prime Minister will address these criticisms in his statement at 12:00.
