Ground control can be gained by doing a ground attack and getting Immense Triumph on your enemy. Once you have gained ground control, your tanks will kill some enemy aircraft in all subsequent ground attacks as long as you can maintain your ground control. The number of aircraft you destroy depends on the number of tanks you use in your ground attacks.

In order to break enemy ground control on your nation, you need to get anything but an Utter Failure in a ground attack on a nation holding the ground control on you. Alternatively, it can also be broken by a third nation getting Immense Triumph on nation holding ground control on you and gaining ground control on them or destroying all enemy ground units (i.e. Soldiers and Tanks) by any means.
