Mahrani, youngest child of the ruthless Northern Emperor, was unlike her sisters. While her brothers were given lands to rule, her sisters had suitors lining up to marry them. Mahrani refused to settle for the traditional fate of being married off to a suitor chosen by her father.
She wanted a land to rule over herself despite being a woman in a time where they were expected to be obedient wives and mothers. So, she sought an audience with her father and made a bold request; to be granted a land to rule over just as her brothers.
Her father, despite favor her over the others, was not amused by her request. His protective instincts toward her made him hesitant to grant her the land she desired. The thought of his beloved daughter facing the harsh realities and perils of ruling both within and outside her borders made him wary.
“You are a woman, young at that. You don’t belong on the battlefield or in the corridors of tough decisions. Your worth is in the safe confines of your home, where you are protected and sheltered from the harsh realm of men.”
Determined, Mahrani replied. “Father, have you no faith in me? Your own flesh and blood? The one you raised with your own hands? Just because I’m a woman, you deny me the opportunity to prove myself?”
The Northern Emperor softens at his favored child’s plea, a sight rarely seen by others. “My flower, being a woman was never a weakness, but a blessing. Your worth is in your beauty, in your ability to bring forth life and nurture it, not in ruling lands and leading men into battle. You are delicate and I wish not to taint you.”
“And what of my mind, Father? My intellect? My strategic thinking? You’re underestimating me. I am your child and I can show you how a woman may rule the court. I am a flower, but I’m not one to be locked away in a glass jar.”
“Don’t mistake my hesitation for underestimation.” The Northern Emperor sighs. “I fear your safety and well-being. Ruling is not a game; it is a path fraught with danger and betrayal.”
“If so, guide and protect me. While I rule over the land, it will still belong to you. Any harm come my way, I let you charge over the battlefield,” she bargains.
He thinks of it thoroughly. Thinking of the pros and cons of her bargain, thinking of the term he shall apply if he were to agree. Finally, he made his mind. “Alright. I will give you a land to rule. However, the land is not as greatest as your brothers’. It’s a small province by the Southern Sea of Cham, easier to manage and out of invasion routes, closer to home-”
“I shall take it,” she was quick to agree, cutting him off before he could finish. He gives her a look and continue.
“Despite that, the land is still lacking in development and the people are still in poverty. Reigning over it is the same as starting a new nation.”
Mahrani nods, still willing to take over the land. The emperor agrees. Eventually, her boldness and determination paid off when she signed the written document, taking over the small territory. Hence, begins her journey as a young female ruler. |
