History: Keystone Island was originally a territory of the Haida native American tribe. It was first sighted by Europeans in 1774. During a fur trading mission in 1794, the Haida natives sunk two vessels under the control of Simon Metcalfe. This inspired the Royal Navy to intervene and the island was invaded and colonized. The settlement of New Exeter was established in the north of the island, and quickly grew. In December of 1812, Keystone Island declared independence from the British Empire, and joined the United States in war against them. The Royal Navy laid siege to the island for 153 days. The pacific supply lines grew too expensive to maintain following a large storm in the Gulf of Alaska, and the blockade was called off. In February 1815, it was negotiated to accept the independence of Keystone Island. In 1854 gold was discovered on the island, and pioneers flocked to the island in search of riches. The cities grew exponentially, and railroads began to be built all across the country. The massive tax revenues from gold mining set the economy of Keystone Island in motion, driving much of its population toward the middle class. As the cities grew, they became industrialized and developed. In April of 1861, with the secession of the south from the United States, Keystone Island joined the conflict on the side of the Union. During this time, Keystone began to manufacture weapons and developed advanced weapons technology in order to help supply the Union forces. Over 13,000 Keystonians volunteered for service under the Keystone Island Legion to fight against the south. In October of 1882, there was a significant earthquake along the coast of the island, causing significant damage to Morrisburg and New Exeter. Over 54% of Morrisburg and 32% was destroyed by the earthquake and subsequent fires. Due to this, a huge construction boom started in the rubble, rippling out to the rest of the country. Infrastructure nationwide was expanded and overhauled, leading to great advances in the transportation network. In August of 1917, Keystone Island officially joined the fight in the Great War against the Central Powers, where they faced over 22,350 casualties, 9,312 of which were during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. During the 1920's the economy boomed as the middle class grew and soldiers returning home settled down into civillian life. After the stock market crash of 1929, dozens of thousands of destitute American industrial workers flocked to Keystone Island in search of work. The lumber and coal mining industries grew rapidly due to the influx of new workers. As the second world war ramped up in Europe, so did the industry on Keystone Island. Steel was as important a commodity as ever, leading to a huge increase in steel production across the island. The Iron Valleys in the south were stripped down to the rock as iron mines carved into the walls of the valleys. The area became one of the most productive iron mining areas on earth. After the war ended, the economy shifted toward new technologies, and took in hundreds of former German scientists, particularly in the sectors of electronics and computer technology. During the next decades, electronics became the foremost industry in Keystone Island. Coming into the 1970's and 80's, it boomed even further. Mastersson Instruments, originally founded as a company to produce image projectors and x-ray equipment, quickly became the leader in computer technology. To this day, Keystone Island is one of the world leaders in technology, being on the forefront of AI and machine learning.
Geography
Continent: North America
Land Area: 16,053.17 sq. km
Terrain: Keystone Island is a mountainous island off the coast of British Columbia. Its situated just north of Vancouver Island, and is similar in size and terrain, being about 35% smaller. The west coast is rugged inlets and islands covered in temperate rainforest and national parks. It is the main area of native population, being their ancestral homelands. Running down the center of the island is a moderately sized mountain range, called the Keystone Island Cascades. The mountains are not overly tall, being only 5-7,000 feet at maximum. The highest peak on the island is Mount Tsangitt at 7,532ft tall. The eastern part of the country is arable plains next to the Queen Charlotte Sound. Rainwater and snowmelt runoff, combined with the mountain barrier from harsh winds and storms ensures a very fertile place for crops to grow.
Highest Peak: Mt. Tsangitt, 2,296 meters
Lowest Valley: Sea level, 0 meters
Climate: Keystone Island is battered by storms from the Gulf of Alaska, experiencing extremely high rainfall on the western side, extremely high snowfall on the mountain peaks of the Keystonian Cascades, and high rainfall on the eastern side, being in the rain shadow of the Cascades. The entire island experiences a mild oceanic climate below 5,000 ft, with a subpolar oceanic at higher elevations. Temperatures do not exceed 80f on a frequent basis, wit the highest recorded temperature being only 86f set on August 23rd 2023. On most of the island, however, it rarely dips below freezing. Military
History: The Keystone Defense Force (KDF) has 86,000 active personnel, and 132,000 reservists. There are four branches, being the KDF Army. KDF Air Force, KDF Navy, and KDF Marines. The KDF is a highly advanced equipment-forward military, due to its small population. The military is deeply entrenched within the Keystonian Cascades, with miles of bunkers and tunnels beneath the mountains. Almost all airbases are hardened with underground aircraft and fuel storage, and command structures are almost always subterranean. Keystone Island expanded its nuclear bunker and shelter networks greatly during the 1950's and 60's due to the proximity to the Soviet Union. In many ways, Keystone Island has been described as the "Switzerland of the West"
