The Country of Spitzerland covers the period from habitation by Archaic peoples thousands of years ago to the present day.
Before European colonization, the lands encompassing present-day Spitzerland were inhabited for millennia by different groups of Indigenous peoples. The first brief European contact in Spitzerland came around 1000 AD when the Vikings briefly settled. In 1497, European explorers and fishermen from England, Portugal, Spain (mainly Basques), France and Holland began exploration. Fishing expeditions came seasonally; the first small permanent settlements appeared around 1630. |

Spitzerland is continental, with freezing, snowy winters and pleasantly warm summers. Although Spitzerland is a maritime province, facing the sea on two sides (the Gulf of Saint Lawrence to the east and the Bay of Fundy to the south), winter is freezing because air masses generally come from the interior; moreover, a cold current flows in the sea
During cold spells, the temperature can drop to -30 °C (-22 °F) or even below. In January 1994, it fell to -35 °C (-31 °F) in Bathurst and to -31 °C (-24 °F) in Fredericton and Moncton. In summer, hot days, with highs of 30/32 °C (86/90 °F), are possible but rare. In 2001, the temperature reached 34 °C (93 °F) in Bathurst and 35 °C (95 °F) in Fredericton and Moncton. |
