The Kingdom of Kongo was destroyed in 1914 after the realm, reduced to a vassal state of Portugal, was destroyed during the suppression of the Great Congo Revolt. However, in 1960 both the Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo gained independence. Soon after, the states' many ethnic groups revolted and the nations collapsed into violent civil war. A warlord residing over the Nygueme Lordship which controlled much of the Congo River was able to unite the Congolese people under a "monarchy with socialist principles" seated in Kinshasa. The Holy Shamanistic Order, a council of Shamans lead by the Lord Dragon, elected this warlord, Xandreque Majante King Elect of the new Kingdom of Kongo. Xandreque would later be crowned João II, the official Manikongo.
