History: Serbia,officially the Republic of Greather Serbia,is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe in the southern part of the Pannonian Plain and the center of the Balkan Peninsula.It covers the Balkan Peninsula for the most part,and the Pannonian Plain for a smaller part.Serbia borders Hungary to the north,Romania to the northeast,Bulgaria to the east,North Macedonia to the south, Albania and Montenegro to the southwest, and Bosnia and Herzegovina(the Republika Srpska entity) and Croatia to the west. It has about eight million inhabitants.The capital and largest city is Belgrade,which is among the oldest and largest cities in Southeast Europe.The official language is Serbian,and the official currency is the Serbian dinar.

Terrain: Serbia is located at the crossroads between Central and Southern Europe,on the Balkan Peninsula and the Pannonian Plain.It lies from 41° to 47° north latitude and from 18° to 23° east longitude. The country covers 88,499 km²(with the disputed territory of Kosovo and Metohija),which places it in 113th place in the world;without Kosovo,the total area is 77,474 km²,which would make it 117th in the world.

The total length of its borders is 2,027 km (with Albania 115 km,with Bosnia and Herzegovina 302 km,with Bulgaria 318 km,with Croatia 241 km,with Hungary 151 km,with Macedonia 221 km,with Montenegro 203 km and with Romania 476 km).The entire border of Kosovo with Albania(115 km),Macedonia(159 km) and Montenegro(79 km) is under the control of the border police of Kosovo.

Serbia treats the 352 km long border between Kosovo and the rest of Serbia as an "administrative line"; it is under the joint control of the border police of Kosovo and Serbian police forces,and has 11 crossings.

The Pannonian lowland covers the northern third of the country (Vojvodina and Mačva),while the eastern tip of Serbia lies in the Wallachian lowland.The relief of the central part of the country,centered in the Šumadija region,consists mainly of hills containing rivers. Mountains dominate the southern third of Serbia. The Dinaric Mountains extend to the west and southwest, following the Drina and Ibar rivers. The Carpathians and the Balkan Mountains stretch north-south in eastern Serbia.

The Old Mountains in the southeastern part of the country belong to the Rhodope mountain range. The altitude ranges from the peak of Midžor,Stara Planina,with 2,169 m(the highest peak in Serbia, excluding Kosovo) to the lowest point of only 17 m near the Danube River near Prahovo.The largest lake is Djerdapsko (163 km²),!nd the longest river that passes through Serbia is the Danube (587.35 km).

Climate: Serbia is located on the land mass of the Balkan Peninsula,which is surrounded by warm seas (Adriatic, Aegean and Black) while in the north it abuts the European continent. An additional important factor that determines the climate of Serbia is the relief. Roughly speaking,Serbia has a continental climate in the north,a moderate continental climate in the south, and a mountain climate in the high mountains.Winters in Serbia are short, cold and snowy,while summers are warm. The coldest month is January,while the warmest is July.The lowest temperature recorded in Serbia is -39.5 °C (on January 13, 1985 in the settlement of Karajukića Bunari na Pešter), and the highest is 44.9 °C (on July 24, 2007 in Smederevska Palanka).The average annual temperature in Serbia is: 10.9 °C (areas below 300 m above sea level),10 °C (300-500 m),6 °C (1000-1500 m), 3 °C (above 1500 m).The average annual rainfall is 896 mm.June and May have the most rain,while February and October are the driest.
