History: The New Union of Straits Settlements is a union of 4 states, Singapore, Johor, Riau and Malacca founded by the British Empire. The state was originally founded in 1826 with the territories of Singapore, Malacca, Dinding and Penang. However, it was incorporate into the new Federation of Malaysia in 1946.

However, due the different interest of Singapore and Malacca in the Federation contrasting the interest of other Malay states, it shortly succeed in 1950 to form a union of Singapore and Malacca.

During this time, the Riau islands had interest in joining the union and it became the union's third state during the Indonesian National Revolution. This addition made the name change to 'Union of Straits Settlement'. Not long later in 1955, the state of Johor joined the union, becoming its fourth state.
