History: The Ezo Republic, originally founded in 1869 after the defeat of Tokugawa loyalists in the Boshin War, successfully resisted the Meiji centralisation through a combination of geographic isolation, alliances with neighbouring Ainu communities, and strategic diplomacy with foreign powers, particularly Russia, China and the UK. Ezo developed a unique political and cultural identity, becoming a sanctuary for former samurai, indigenous Ainu peoples, and political dissenters from the rapidly modernizing Japanese mainland.

The republic quickly changed its name to the Great Hokkaido Republic to be more inclusive and to elevate the beautiful island's status.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Hokkaido cultivated a mixed economy, blending traditional agriculture with nascent industrial efforts in fishing, mining, and trade. Its socialist underpinnings grew organically out of the communal practices of the Ainu and the egalitarian ethos adopted by former Tokugawa loyalists who sought a break from the feudal hierarchies of old Japan. The island avoided involvement in Japan’s imperialist expansions of the early 20th century, maintaining neutrality during both World Wars much like the well defended Switzerland, and instead focused on building a social welfare state inspired by European socialist models.

In the post-World War II era, as Japan was occupied and reshaped by the United States, Hokkaido resisted integration, using its connections with the Soviet Union and the UK to remain independent. The Cold War further solidified its socialist direction, with successive governments emphasizing worker cooperatives, public ownership of key industries, and social equity programs. The country’s Socialist Party has ruled since 1925, steadily advancing progressive reforms in education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability.

Today, the Great Hokkaido Republic remains a unique socialist state, blending its indigenous heritage with modern democratic socialism. Its economy focuses on green technology, sustainable fishing, and cultural tourism, while it maintains a non-aligned stance in international politics promoting peace and local governance.
