The 17th and 18th centuries were unpleasant for the region. The Nordic region was the scene of numerous wars and conflicts, especially during the Great Northern War (1700-1721), when Russia and Sweden fought for dominance in the region. In the following years, the region was subjected to Russification, although local ethnic groups retained their languages and traditions.
In the early 20th century, the region experienced a wave of industrialization. In the 1920s and 1930s, as part of the Soviet Union's first five-year plan, large industrial plants were built, as well as railroads linking the region to the rest of the country. The Karelians, Finns and Sami forced to work in these enterprises became part of the Soviet industrial machine. However, their cultural and linguistic characteristics were often subjected to repression and assimilation.
It was during these years, in response to increasing repression and the threat of a disappearing national identity, that an underground organization known as the Union of the United North (UUN) began to form among the Karelians. They established links with Finnish and Sami activists, creating a network of mutual help and support. Despite severe repression by the Soviet authorities, the movement grew to include more and more people.
During World War II, when the region was occupied by Finnish troops, UUN saw an opportunity for activism. Underground groups actively cooperated with Finnish forces, hoping that a Finnish victory would lead to independence for the region. However, after the end of the war and the return of Soviet power, many UUN activists were arrested and sent to camps.
The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 opened new opportunities for self-government and revitalization of cultural traditions. At this time, UUN emerged from the underground and became an official political force promoting the ideas of autonomy and independence.
In 2029, when civil war broke out in Russia, UUN saw this as a chance to realize its long-held dream. Amid chaos and weakened central authority, the movement's leaders announced the creation of an independent state, the Union of the United North. During the three years of civil war, the UUN had to face many challenges. Despite initial successes, the onslaught of opposing forces forced the UUN to retreat to the Kola Peninsula. Here, amidst harsh landscapes and impregnable mountains, they managed to gain a foothold and organize a defense.
In 2032, after the end of the Russian Civil War, the UUN retained the territories gained during the civil war, despite all the pressure from Finland, Norway and other countries.
