Terrain: | Minnesota's terrain is diverse, with a variety of landforms, forests, and prairies: Forests Minnesota has three biomes that converge in the state, including the Big Woods deciduous forest in the southeast, the northern boreal forest, and prairie grasslands in the west and southwest. The Big Woods, also known as the hardwood forest, was once extensive, and the northern coniferous forests are a vast wilderness of pine and spruce trees. Prairies Minnesota has fertile prairies in the west and south of the state. Lakes Minnesota is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" because it has over 11,800 lakes that are larger than 10 acres, though it actually has many more.
