House Toras:

House Toras is the current ruling family of Rizia and the most powerful of the country's three royal houses. It controls the throne as well as the province of Valenqiris and the city of Iza.

House Toras History:

Its members are descended from Henricus Toras, a Valgish prince who married the Marquise of Monqiz in the early 1100s and established himself as ruler of the city-state. With the help of intermarriage with the Valgish Empire, his dynasty maintained a stronghold over Monqiz throughout the Markian era and, upon the foundation of the Kingdom of Rizia, assumed control of surrounding Valenqiris.

The family maintained a tradition of intermarriage with the Valgish Empire took the throne in 1810 following Duke Willem Toras' arranged marriage to Ariana Rubaz, daughter of the ruling Rubaz family, and the subsequent War of Rizian Succession.

Since then, rulers from House Toras have also held the title of Duke (or Duchess) of Valenqiris. The family has kept control of Porte Drazon for four generations, and assumed governorship of Iza following the uprising of 1926. They are supported by the majority of Rizians, despite a dip in popularity during the reign of Valero "The Frail".

Much of House Toras' wealth still comes from its control of shipping through the Port of Monqiz, as well as its abundant agricultural land and vineyards and its part-ownership of the Rizian Oil and Gas company.

House Sazon:

House Sazon is one of the three royal houses of Rizia. Its members are descended from the ruling family of the province of Brenas, which is their current domain, and its sigil is a cactus. The current head of the house is Duke Manus Sazon, leader of the Rizian People's Party and the son of Lucas Sazon.

House Sazon History:

Originally one of several noble families that alternated control over the city of Iza, the Sazons increased their sphere of influence during the War of Rizian Succession, when Duke Fedo used his blood ties to the royal family to lay claim to the throne. In the following century the Sazon family retained control of the Province of Brenas, though no members made it into the central government.

In the years leading up to the 1926 Uprising, House Sazon was rumored to have been colluding with Arcasia in undermining the monarchy. This culminated in the betrayal and execution of Duke Lucas Sazon, as well as the subsequent exile of his wife Angelica and the loss of the Zille region to Wehlen, weakening the family significantly. However, the Sazons were allowed to keep their hold on Brenas' minor cities including Sallabes, Jales and Argno after swearing an oath of fealty to the crown.

Historically, the Sazons are known to be patrons of arts and education, diverting significant funding to the University of Iza as well as cultural venues throughout Brenas and Rizia Imperi.

House Azaro:

House Azaro, the reigning family of Montaklar and Cardesse-Montaklar, stands as one of Rizia's mighty royal houses. Their sigil, a pair of crossed swords, embodies their strength. Descendants of Duke Bredus Azaro, tracing their lineage back to the original Rizia ruling family, the Reznas, their rule began in Montaklar, expanding to the neighboring Cardesse region.

House of Delegates:

The House of Delegates (Rizian: Casz di Delegasda) is the legislative body of the Kingdom of Rizia. First created in the aftermath of the Uprising of 1926 by decree of King Valero and his council, it serves to represent the interests of the Rizian people in the lawmaking process.

Delegates are selected from Rizia's provincial councils. Half of the provincial councillors are directly selected by the province's leaders, while the other half are elected by the citizenry. The election and delegate selection process takes place every six years. The Speaker of the House and opposition leader are chosen by majority vote within each party.

Delegates have the ability to submit new decrees to the Royal Council, as traditionally represented in House sessions by the Grand Vizier. They may also issue approvals or disapprovals of decrees the monarch has made. However, these are treated as 'recommendations', and the monarch is under no obligation to heed them.

Currently, only two parties are represented in the House of Delegates; the Rizian National Coalition and the Rizian People's Party.

Early History (499 - 1805)

Rizia's name finds its roots in the Rezenid Empire, a powerful ancient confederation that dominated much of Southern Merkopa at the beginning of the first millennium. The ruling Reznas family strategically established their stronghold, Drazon, at the Zpana River's mouth, taking advantage of the fertile soil. Drazon would later be known as Porte Drazon after merging with the city of Porte Novo.

The region fell to the Markian Empire in the early 1100s, which built roads, bridges, and aqueducts, and mined small amounts of gold to support their expansion. This rule lasted until 1615 when the Rubaz family, led by Victoriano Rubaz, declared their independence from the crumbling Markian Empire, forming the modern Kingdom of Rizia comprising three semi-autonomous provinces – Brenas, Valenqiris, and Cardesse-Montaklar, governed from the central domain of Rizia Imperii. These provinces would be led by different royal houses for a time.

Modern History (1805 - present)

In 1805, following the death of Xavi Rubaz, a split between his three heirs (and their respective cadet branches) led to the War of Rizian Succession; the civil war lasted for four years and involved foreign powers like the Empire of Valgos, the Empire of Moridia, and the Mousser Empire. House Toras, led by Ariana Toras, was victorious in the war and took control of Rizia Imperii. Thus, beginning the Toras family's hold on the Rizian throne. The two other houses, House Azaro and House Sazon, took control of Cardesse-Montaklar and Brenas respectively.

A period of rapid industrialization and advancement in gold mining technology ensued during the reign of Lyza Toras, which was dubbed as the Rizian Golden Age. This period lasted from the late 1800s to the end of Lyza's reign in 1918. This propelled Rizia into unprecedented economic prosperity and allowed the country to have widespread influence in southern Merkopa. During Lyza's reign, social reforms such as expanding women's rights and universal access to education were implemented. Following the death of Queen Lyza in 1918, her eldest son, Valero, took power.

Early in Valero's reign, he began a war against the newly-independent Grand Duchy of Pales; the Rizian army succeeded in capturing the majority of Greater Pales, yet just barely reaching the area surrounding the city of Pales. However, Lespia intervened in support of Pales, which grinded the war to a halt, which led to a ceasefire. This soured support within the country for the King, which led to a mutiny by the Rizian Navy, beginning the largest revolt against the Rizian monarchy in history. Supported by republicans and factions of House Sazon, the revolt spread across the country, even succeeding in kidnapping the Crown Prince and murdering the Duke of Cardesse-Montaklar. The King only managed to stop the revolt via Wehzek military intervention. In return, however, the region of Zille would be transferred to Wehlen for 25 years.

Following the uprising, most of the republican supporters were suppressed; the Duke of Brenas was executed for his role in the uprising and his wife was sent to exile in the island of Caleqabiz. Meanwhile, the city of Iza was put under the stewardship of Hugo Toras. Valero would however acknowledge the demands of the pro-democratic faction, establishing the House of Delegates. Later on, the kingdom pursued closer ties with Rumburg, later becoming a member of GRACE. On November 18, 1949, Valero passed away. His son, Romus, ascended to the throne.
