The Prince-Archbishopric survived the reunification of Germany, as it refused to betray its Habsburg allies and resisted the Prussians in 1866. It became an Indepent Soviet Republic from 1918 to 1920 until the opponents of the Prince-Archbishop were crushed by the Freikorps. Attempts to integrate it into Germany by coercion were done in the 1930s and 1940s, leading to its integration in 1940. Despite many efforts to save the Jewish population, around a third were deported and never came back. It was occupied by the soviets in 1945 and became an autonomous region split between the DDR and Poland. In 1989, the Prince-Archbishop Heinrich IX returned to Kirgenland after it regained independence during the First Kirgenländer Civil War. The Federal Republic of Kirgenland was abolished and Kirgenland was restored as a Prince-Archbishopric.
