History: The modern history of Katanga begins with the subduing of the Yeke Kingdom, Central Africa's most influential kingdom at the time, which controlled the majority of the modern area of Katanga, by the Congo Free State in 1888. Katanga, like the entire CFS, went through a series of human rights violations and atrocities. This mounted international pressure on Belgium to take full control of the Congo Free State and oust Leopold II, which it did so in 1908. Katanga served as the main source of income for Belgium during its days in exile during the World Wars.

Katanga's first independent modern goverment began with the formation of the Republic of the Congo in 1960. Ethnic nationalism and tribal separatism would remain unsolved however, leading to mass conflict erupting within the Leopoldville, Kivu and Ruanda-Urundi regions. These separatist groups, including the State of Katanga as well as neighboring South Kasai were supported by the former colonial powers, however the Congo would successfully bring back government control to the region. Katanga, unlike all the other groups, managed to remain independent, allowing for the creation of a full Republic, and the implementation of a general constitution not long after.

Economy
Description: The economy of Katanga remains heavily dependent on the extraction of natural resources, with further money being earned from the exportation of resources. The government pursues the "import subsidization" policy, seeking to maximize exports and minimize imports to maximize profits and become a self-sustaining economy.
The central bank of Katanga has regulated the value of the Katangese franc, cutting all ties with the Franceafrique policy in an attempt to combat corruption within the economy. The currency has remained relatively stable.
Average Yearly Income: $157.05
Gross Domestic Product (GDP): $7,419,949,644.00
GDP per Capita: $1,565.40
Gross National Income (GNI): $4,665,310,645.00
Industries: Kousso administration carried out the mass nationalization of key industries, with the creation of state-owned corporations to do so. Almost all mines in the country are now under state control, allowing for the mass production of raw resources and minerals with great profit being consolidated for the state under the corporation. Raw resource production remains the state's largest industry by far. Rapid industrialization policies also allowed for self-sustainability and the creation of a large state-owned manufacturing industry making this one of the largest facets of the economy. Traditional industries like fishing and lumber production still remain to an extent, unlike agriculture, which has been taken up mostly by the private sector.
Military
History: The Majeshi ya Katanga was formed shortly after independence in 1960, rounding up Mai-Mai generals and lower ranks to form an organized militia fighting for the Republic, utilizing their knowledge of non-conventional warfare to fend off both the Lumumba and Gizenga governments.

After the Congo Crisis, the government had the resources to carry out the creation of a convential military, personally trained by Mai-Mai leaders to adopt some non-conventional warfare.

Katanga has remained neutral in most regional and global conflicts since.
