History

1035-1200

Following King Cnut's death in 1035, the North Sea Empire was on the brink of collapse. Anticipating the power vacuum, a council of influential figures known as the "Nordsørådet", comprising of thirty leaders (ten from each constituent nation of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden). They drafted a new governance model, implementing a decentralized system that granted considerable autonomy to local jarls and earls, yet preserved the Empire's integrity through a unified central body. This shift in governance enabled the Empire to not only withstand the initial turmoil but to embark on an ambitious phase of expansion. Between 1035 and 1060, the North Sea Empire extended its influence over the Baltic Sea's eastern shores, increasing its territorial hold. Simultaneously, the Empire intensified its presence in the British Isles.

The Empire invested heavily in its infrastructure, allocating a significant increase compared to Cnut's reign-. The funds were allocated towards the development of roads, ports, and cities. Notably, the construction of the "Vikingeværftet" in Roskilde, which was a colossal project completed in 1085 and symbolized the Empire's maritime supremacy. It also saw the introduction of 'Vikingekoden,' comprising of over 200 laws, blending traditional Viking ethos with more modern administrative and legal principles, which became the cornerstone of societal governance. With these reforms, the North Sea Empire not only averted the collapse post-Cnut but also laid the foundations for a resilient, expansive, and culturally rich empire.

1200-1400
From 1200 to 1400, the North Sea Empire solidified its position as a maritime force in Europe. Under the leadership of King Erik, a significant expansion of the naval fleet was undertaken around 1210, increasing the number of longships to over 500. The Empire's naval dominance was further strengthened by the introduction of the 'Drekar-Class' ships in 1235, which were larger and more robust, capable of carrying up to 80 warriors.

This formidable fleet enabled control over crucial trade routes, particularly in the North and Baltic Seas. By 1250, the Empire had established key maritime trade hubs in cities like Bergen, Oslo, and Aalborg, significantly boosting trade revenues, which accounted for nearly 40% of the Empire's total income. The period also saw the establishment of overseas colonies, with the most notable being New Hedeby, founded in 1278 near the mouth of the River Thames, serving as a trading and military outpost.

Naval confrontations were frequent during this era as the Empire clashed with emerging European powers. The Battle of the Skagerrak in 1292 was a notable conflict where the North Sea Empire's navy, led by Admiral Rurik Olafsson, triumphed over a fleet of Hanseatic League ships. Another significant engagement was the Siege of Visby in 1341, where the Empire successfully defended its trade interests against the Kingdom of Sweden.

1400-1600
In this period, the North Sea Empire underwent a transformation marking its entry into the Renaissance. This era, known as the 'Nordic Renaissance'. The cultural renaissance was ignited in 1412 when the famed poet and scholar Magnusson wrote "Sjöfararnas Sånger", a collection of poems that blended traditional Viking themes with philosophical insights. This work inspired a wave of artistic expression across the Empire, leading to the establishment of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences in Copenhagen in 1435. The Academy became a hub for thinkers and artists, such as the renowned painter Ingrid Olafsdottir, whose 1458 masterpiece "The Voyage of the Sea Kings" depicted the legendary naval exploits of the Empire's ancestors.

In 1473, the Empire launched the 'Stjärna Flotta', a group of naval vessels designed by the celebrated engineer Björn Jorgensen. These ships was equipped with new technology for navigation and reinforced with iron-clad hulls, wich allowed the Empire to expand its maritime reach and maintain its dominance over crucial trade routes.

The most significant political development was the transition from a decentralized council governance to a more unified monarchical system, initiated under King Gustav II in 1489. This shift was prompted by the need for efficient governance and stability, particularly due to the expanding geographical and economic scope of the Empire. Gustav's reforms included the establishment of a centralized administrative body, which oversaw various aspects of governance, from taxation to international diplomacy. These reforms was introduced in the 1491 'Enhedstraktaten,' signed by regional leaders, which officially centralized power under the monarchy and established a codified legal system.

1600-1800
During this era, The North Sea Empire underwent a huge transformation, heavily influenced by the Enlightenment. The Empire saw a gradual shift in governance and societal values. The monarchy, led by figures like King Harald IV (ruled 1612-1655) and Queen Astrid I (ruled 1678-1713), began to balance the absolute power of the crown with advisory councils representing the nobility and bourgeois class.

Colonial ambitions reached a peak during this period. The Empire established colonies in the New World, particularly on the eastern coasts of what is now known as Vinland (modern-day Canada) and Freyja's Land (part of the Caribbean). In Asia, outposts and trading hubs were established in India and the Indonesian archipelago. Notable among these was the fortified port in Sumatra, founded in 1667, which became a center for spice trade.

However, this expansion was not without conflict. The Empire's incursions led to skirmishes and prolonged conflicts with local powers, most notably the conflict with the Majapahit Empire. The economic impact of these colonial ventures was significant. By 1700, the Empire's annual revenue from colonial trade was a substantial part of the national treasury.

1800-2000
The North Sea Empire witnessed a boom in the coal industry, particularly between 1800 and 1850, saw a tenfold increase in production, reaching an astonishing 50 million tons annually by mid-century. This industrial surge propelled the Empire into a new era of economic might. The Empire's capital Copenhagen, became a hub of industrial activity with the establishment of the Jørgensen Steelworks in 1832, which later played a role in military advancements.

The World War in 1914 tested the Empire’s military power. Under the command of Field Marshal Erik Gustavsson, the Empire's forces consisting of 1.2 million soldiers were exceptional against the Axis powers. Following the war, the Empire began an ambitious reconstruction plan, with over 200,000 homes rebuilt and modernized by 1925, and a focus on strengthening infrastructure, including the completion of an 500-kilometer railway in 1930.

World War II further challenged the Empire. King Christian X led the Empire's viking force, which was expanded to an unprecedented size of 2.4 million warriors equipped with modern weaponry. The Empire’s Air Force was led by Lars Nielsen and played a big role in the aerial defense during the Blitz of Nordhavn in 1943.

In the post-war era under the guidance of King Frederik IX (1947-1972), the Empire began the modernization prcoess. The Frederik Economic Plan of 1947 injected 4 billion kroner into the economy, starting a period of rapid growth. The 1950s and 1960s saw the founding of the Nordhavn Institute of Technology in 1955 and the launch of the Empire’s first satellite, NordSat-1, in 1964. The other half of the 20th century was characterized by a strengthened military presence, with the establishment of the Northern Command in 1975, overseeing a standing force of 750,000 warriors, and the development of the naval vessel, HMS Valhalla, in 1985.

2000-2096
The North Sea Empire on the turn of the millenium, relaunched raiding operations. Under the rule of an unbroken line of absolute monarchs, the Empire's commitment to its martial heritage became the cornerstone of its continued global influence. By 2021, the Viking force numbered 800,000 warriors and began raiding campaigns, targeting key economic targets across the globe. These raids brought not only substantial wealth but also reasserted the Empire's influence on the global stage.

Throughout the early 21st century, the Empire's raids grew in audacity and scale, resulting in 'Operation Ragnarok' in 2075, which was a series of coordinated strikes that netted $10 billion in resources and artifacts, solidifying the Empire's economic and military might. The Viking force now had expanded to 1,240,000 warriors. Domestically, the Empire witnessed stability and prosperity. The coal industry, central to the Empire's economy, saw advancements, increasing production by 70% while reducing environmental impacts significantly.

In January 2096, the Empire was headed towards a new era with the crowning of King Christian XI to the throne at the age of 41. Known for his strong leadership and dedication to the Empire's traditions, Christian XI's coronation was a grand event celebrated across the large Empire. King Christian XI promised a continuation of the Empire's legacy of strength, resilience, and global dominance, with a clear vision for maintaining its stature as a formidable force.
