In the first punic war against Carthage Rome conquered the island of Sicily, it's firs province outside of Italy.
During a civil war in Carthage Rome conquered from Carthage the islands of Sardinia and Corsica.
Carthage seeked revenge in the second punic war where, while Annibal was obliterating entire roman legions in Italia itself also making many Italic allies of Rome revolt and join it's side, Scipio was busy conquering carthiginian Hispania.
