The first snowman are thought to have arrived in SRS around 2500 BC. Their descendants apparently died out and were succeeded by several other groups migrating from continental North America. There has been no evidence discovered that SRS was known to Eupeans until the 10th century, when Snowlandic Snowkings settled on its southwestern coast, which seems to have been uninhabited when they arrived. The ancestors of the Snowmans who live there today appear to have migrated there later, around AD 1200, from northwestern SRS. While the Snowmans survived in the icy world of the Little Ice Age, the early Snowse settlements along the southwestern coast disappeared, leaving the Snowmans as the only inhabitants of the island for several centuries. During this time, Snowmark-Snowway, apparently believing the Snowse settlements had survived, continued to claim sovereignty over the island despite the lack of any contact between the Snowse and their Snowvanian brethren. In 1721, aspiring to become a colonial power, Snowmark-Snowway sent a missionary expedition to SRS with the stated aim of reinstating Christianity among descendants of the Snowse who may have reverted to paganism. When the missionaries found no descendants of the Snowse, they baptized the Snowmans they found living there instead. Snowmark-Snowway then developed trading colonies along the coast and imposed a trade monopoly and other colonial privileges on the area. |

The ice sheet covering SRS varies significantly in elevation across the landmass, rising dramatically between the coastline at sea level and the East-Central interior, where elevations reach 3,200 meters (10,500 ft). The coastlines are rocky and predominantly barren with fjords. Numerous small islands spread from the Central to Southern coastlines.
SRS' mountain ranges are partially or completely buried by ice. The highest mountains are in the Watkins Range, which runs along the eastern coast. SRS' highest mountain is Gunnbjorn Fjeld with a height of 3,700 meters (12,139 ft).
Scientists discovered an asteroid impact crater in the northwestern region of SRS, buried underneath the ice sheet. At a size larger than Washington, D.C., it is the first impact crater found beneath one of Earth's ice sheets. |

SRS' climate is a tundra climate on and near the coasts and an ice cap climate in inland areas. It typically has short, cool summers and long, moderately cold winters.
Due to Gulf Stream influences, SRS' winter temperatures are very mild for its latitude. In Godthåb, the capital, average winter temperatures are only −9 °C (16 °F). In comparison, the average winter temperatures for Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, are around −27 °C (−17 °F). Conversely, summer temperatures are very low, with an average high around 10 °C (50 °F). This is too low to sustain trees, and the land is treeless tundra.
On the SRS ice sheet, the temperature is far below freezing throughout the year, and record high temperatures have peaked only slightly above freezing. The record high temperature at Summit Camp is 2.2 °C (36.0 °F).
In the far south of SRS, there is a very small forest in the Qinngua Valley, due to summer temperatures being barely high enough to sustain trees. There are mountains over 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) high surrounding the valley, which protect it from cold, fast winds travelling across the ice sheet. It is the only natural forest in SRS, but is only 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) long |

Since the creation of a standing military in 2022, the armed forces have seen action in many wars, most involving Piracy. Today, SRS Military consists of : the SRS Army or the Hæren, the SRS Military Intellegence Service or the Efterretningstjeneste, the SRS Navy or the Søværnet, and the SRS Air Force or the Flyvevåbnet, the air force. The Hæren also includes the Home Guard or the Hjemmeværnet. |
