History: The first inhabitants of the forested area later known as Lórien were a group of Nandor that refused to cross the Hithaeglir. Lórien was one of their scattered settlements in the area. Later, however, as the power of the Longbeards of Moria grew, they relocated to the western side of the Anduin, across the Nimrodel. The land in which they dwelt (the forest east of the Hithaeglir, above Fangorn and below Mirkwood) became known in the Silvan tongue as Lórinand, or Laurelindórenan.

By the Second Age, Sindarin Elves had enriched its population, and they were ruled by a Sindarin king, Amdír. Before the War of the Elves and Sauron, Galadriel and Celeborn travelled over the Misty Mountains to dwell there. Amdír perished in the War of the Last Alliance. His son and the last Sindarin King of Lórien was Amroth.

In the middle of the Third Age Amroth went to Edhellond near Dol Amroth in Gondor in search of Nimrodel, and was lost at sea. After his time the Silvan Elves of Lórien long had no kings and were ruled by Celeborn and Galadriel as lord and lady.

The Golden Wood was relatively close to Mirkwood and Dol Guldur. Around the time Sauron's forces were attacking Minas Tirith, Dol Guldur sent forces to attack Lothlórien. There were three assaults in total, but though the outer woods were ravaged, the lands inhabited by the Elves were protected thanks to both Elven skill and Galadriel's power. After the three assaults failed, Lórien eventually sent its own forces to attack Dol Guldur. With the fall of the Dark Lord this assault was successful and Galadriel cast the walls down.

After Galadriel left for Valinor, the Elves of Lórien were ruled by their lord Celeborn alone, and the realm was expanded to include a part of southern Mirkwood, but it was quickly de-populated during the Fourth Age. In "The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen," the timeless Elven kingdom is depicted as being wholly abandoned by the time of King Elessar's passing. Even after the assaults on Lórien by Sauron's forces during the War of the Ring, there were several thousand Silvan Elves remaining in the land. Celeborn himself went to dwell in Rivendell, whilst many of the other Elves moved to Thranduil's Woodland Realm.

Galadriel bore Nenya on a ship from the Grey Havens into the West, accompanied by the other two Elven Rings and their bearers. With the Ring gone, the magic and beauty of Lórien also faded, along with the extraordinary Mallorn trees that had lived for centuries, and it was gradually depopulated. By the time Arwen came there to die in FO 121, Lothlórien was deserted. She was buried on the hill of Cerin Amroth, where she and Aragorn had been betrothed.
Geography
Continent: Australia
Land Area: 125,528.52 sq. km
Terrain: Lorinand was a forest realm. It lay in the west of Wilderland. To its west stood the Misty Mountains, with the Dwarf-realm of Moria, and on its east ran the great river Anduin. Across the Anduin lay the forest of Mirkwood and the fortress of Dol Guldur, which could be glimpsed from high points in the realm. The river Silverlode or Celebrant flowed through Lorinand and joined the Anduin; it had a tributary from the west, the river Nimrodel. The realm lay primarily to the north of the Silverlode, with a small strip of forested land to the south. The main part of the realm was the triangular region between the converging rivers called the Naith (Sindarin for "spearhead") by the Elves or the Gore or Angle in the Common Speech. The tip of the Naith was called the Egladil (Sindarin for "elven-point").

Caras Galadhon (from galadh ("tree") was the chief city of Lorinand and the main settlement of the Galadhrim in Middle-earth. Founded by Amroth in the Third Age, deep in the forest, the city's dwellings were atop tall mallorn trees; the mallorn had been brought to that land by Galadriel. The city was "some ten miles" from the point where the rivers Silverlode (Sindarin: Celebrant) and Anduin met, close to the eastern border of the realm. In the trees there were many tree-platforms, which could be elaborate dwellings or simple guard-posts. Stairways of ladders were built around the main trees, and at night the city was lit by "many lamps" - "green and gold and silver". The city's entrance was on the southern side.

"That is the fairest of all the dwellings of my people. There are no trees like the trees of that land. For in the autumn their leaves fall not, but turn to gold. Not till the spring and the new green opens do they fall, and then the boughs are laden with yellow flowers; and the floor of the wood is golden, and golden is the roof, and its pillars are of silver, for the bark of the trees is smooth and grey."

Highest Peak: Caradhras, 4,877 meters
Lowest Valley: Nan Anduin, 274 meters
Climate: The land of Nan Anduin, blessed with the magic of Galadriel and its elven inhabitants, is both warm and temperate, the forested vale a host to an eternal spring. Despite the unnatural climate, the annual cycles of the mallorn trees planted there remain synchronized with the outside seasons of the surrounding earth.

Description: Lórien functions as a set of interdependent units called Glades, each responsible for one aspect of the Elves' lives. The Lord coördinates the actions of the Glades and appoints the Masters from among his most skillful subjects. The land is held in common, but the Elves claim their homes and movable goods as their own.

Industries: Weavers’ Glade
One of the larger glades, this group made most of the clothing for the populace of Lórien, as well as other woven items such as ropes, the plaited screens used to divide flets, and any other items of cloth or related materials.
Near the borders of the Wood were many small fields where a cotton-like plant was grown. From this was made the fine grey cloth preferred by the Sindar, as well as the more rustic apparel of the Silvan Elves. A tall grass related to hemp was also grown, and the long, soft strands, once treated in a manner known only to the Weavers, attained a very high tensile strength. It was used for bowstrings, thread for heavier garments, and was woven to make the silky ropes necessary in day-to-day life.

Boatmen’s Glade
Although Lórien did not use many boats, there were several vessels maintained at all times in the “Hythe” along the Silverlode. Some were barges, others small canoes, a few were truly seaworthy craft. These vessels were primarily for use on the Silverlode and Anduin, however, to carry messengers from the Golden Wood.

Smiths’ Glade
Many Noldor went with Galadriel when she left Ost-in-Edhil in the Second Age. Some of these – including Curudol and Aegnor the Master-smith – were members of the Gwaith-i-Mirdain, and they tutored the smiths of Lórien. These forgers were able to create weapons, armor and tools of unique, delicate beauty and superior strength.

Bakers’ Glade
The Elves of this Glade were the cooks of Lórien, specializing in grinding the harvested grains into flour, the making of breads and cakes (including Lembas) in their large, open-air ovens, and other, similar chores. Hardly simple bakers, though, this guild also made cheese and butter, harvested honey, fermented wine and mead, and brewed beer.

Craftsmen’s Glade
The members of this guild fashioned most items which did not fall under the category of “weaving” or “smithing”. Thus they made all items of wood, such as flets. They worked closely with the woodsmen, both in the gathering of timber and when fashioning new flets or telain.

Woodsmen’s Glade
These were the keepers of the forest. Though there was a great power maintaining the health of the wood, more mundane maintenance was also necessary. The paths had to be maintained, and the timber forests on the perimeter tended. These timber woods were not mallorns, but fine beech, birch, and other light-colored woods. Woodsmen also worked with the Craftsmen when designing flets for the mallorns, training branches to grow a certain way to make the platforms as sturdy as possible. The central job of the Woodsmen was the maintenance of Lórien’s gardens, vinyards, and fields. This was the largest Glade, and was often supplemented by members of other groups to help during harvest periods. Small fields within the forest boundaries yielded bountiful harvests of grains, fruits, and vegetables. Vineyards started with cuttings from the renowned vines of Dorwinion, had achieved new quality under the power of Galadriel.
