The Islamic Republic of Almuncadir was founded in 1835 after the Malês Revolt in the city of Salvador, Empire of Brazil. The Malês were slaves literate in arabic and of muslim origin - Malê was a portuguese adaptation of Mali, the geographical origin of those slaves - regarded as the best slaves in the empire. The malês, following the example of Haiti, used their literacy abilities to organize a revolution against their masters. The revolution counted with the help of other slaves, the urban poor and freedmen. After the initial takeover of the city, the rebels got a weapons loan from the United Provinces of La Plata to continue their war effort against the Empire of Brazil. The revolution soon spread out to most of the Todos os Santos' bay area before the imperial army arrived. The two year long siege of Salvador ended with a deal between the Emperor and the rebels, with the Treaty of Manaus being signed in 1839 recognizing the city of Almuncadir - the arabic name of the city of Salvador - as a sovereign republic. The Meaning of city names: Calíge: It means "Bay" in arabic (Khalij). The country was part of the Bahia province of Brazil, with "bahia" being an old version of "Baía", which means bay in portuguese. Sauano: It means "flint" in arabic (Sawan). The island in which it is was called 'itaparica' by the natives, which means 'sparking stone'. Alcadiz Amaro: It means "Saint Amaro" (Alqidiys Amarw). The village was called that after the saint. With the islamic influence in the language, the name of the, now city, changed to its arabic version. In the daily lives people call the city only by its first name, Alcadiz. Alsalibo: The Island of Itaparica was called "Vera Cruz" (true cross), whose translation to arabic goes by "Alsalib Alhaqiqiu", which became its official name under the Almucadian rule. However, the locals, mostly portuguese speakers, would corrupt the name of the island to a shorter version, calling it 'Alsalibo', which comprises only the "cross" part of the name. The southern part of the island has a village by the same name of the island, which ended up adopting its corrupt version as the neomozarabian language started to take hold in the country. Abrantes: From the name of the village "Vila Nova do Espírito Santo de Abrantes" (New village of the Abrantes' holy ghost), with Abrantes being the name of a portuguese noble house.
